BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's basketball team tallied a dominating 68-46 win over North Florida on Dec. 20 at Branch McCracken Court at Assembly Hall. Three Hoosiers scored in double figures, marking the fourth time this season the team has accomplished the feat, and IU carded a season-high 15 assists.
Indiana improved to 6-5 on the season while North Florida dropped to 2-6.
Senior guard Cyndi Valentin led the Hoosier scoring effort with 25 and tallied six assists. Valentin also went 9-of-9 from the charity stripe to take the second-place spot in the IU record book for the most consecutive free throws made with 37. Valentin now owns the top two spots in the category and is chasing the all-time record she set last year of 48.
Senior guard Jenny DeMuth and senior forward Angela Hawkins finished the contest with 12 and 10 points, respectively, to round out the Hoosiers in double figures. DeMuth finished 5-of-8 from the charity stripe with five rebounds and three steals, while Hawkins finished with three boards and one assist.
Valentin hit a driving jumper on the left side of the lane to kick off a 20-2 Hoosier run. Indiana held the Lady Ospreys scoreless from the field for the first 13 minutes of the first half, with their only points coming by way of the free-throw line. On the offensive end, IU used one-touch passing to overcome the zone and work the ball in for easy shots in the paint. DeMuth and freshman forward Whitney Thomas' right side penetration highlighted the Hoosiers' movement in the first stanza.
North Florida's forward Alana Mountfield carried the scoring load in the first half, knocking down the Lady Ospreys' first bucket at the 6:54 mark to end a 18-point run by the Hoosiers and a near 11-minute scoring drought.
Indiana entered the locker room with a 40-10 advantage and forced 17 turnovers along with nine steals in the frame. IU also held North Florida to 14 percent shooting from the floor on a 2-of-14 effort, while UNF finally posted double figures with 31 seconds remaining in the opening period.
Indiana then returned to its stingy defense it showcased in the first half and held UNF to just seven points during the next nine minutes of play and extended its lead to 51-26.
In the closing minutes, freshman guard Kim Roberson set up Valentin for a three-pointer to tally her career-high fifth assist. The duo combined to give the Hoosiers their largest lead of the second half at 54-26.
The Hoosiers finished the game shooting 45 percent (14-of-31) from the field and 18-of-21 from the free-throw line.
The Hoosiers return to the hardwood for their Big Ten opener against Iowa on Dec. 29. Tipoff is set at 7 p.m. at Assembly Hall and can be heard on WHCC-FM 105.1 with Jeremy Gray calling all the action.
