BOONE, N.C. - Indiana field hockey improved to 3-0 for the season after a 1-0 win over Appalachian State on Friday, Sept. 2. Despite a stifling Mountaineer defense, senior Lesley Wiler was able to put one past for the win.
Wiler, the game's only scorer, notched the score in the third minute of the game off an assist from junior Morgan Miller after a penalty corner. Appalachian State, who was outshot 26-3, had the opportunity to tie the game with a penalty corner at the game's end, but their efforts were stopped short when goalkeeper Haley Exner deflected the shot for her only save of the night.
"I thought we came into a different environment," head coach Amy Robertson said. "We tried to stick to our game plan, but Appalachian State took out our momentum several times. I thought they played spectacular. Their goalkeeper had an awesome night. I was happy to see us stay poised and calm at the end when they had some attacking penetration. Appalachian State is a tough place to play. They had the crowd behind them. I'm happy that we came out of here with a win, we will take it and run and come out ready for the next game on Sunday."
The Hoosiers will take on defending national champions, Wake Forest on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Winston-Salem.
