BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Behind two goals from redshirt sophomore Morgan Fleetwood, the Indiana field hockey team topped Miami (Ohio), 6-4, in a preseason scrimmage at the IU Hockey Field in Bloomington on Wednesday, Aug. 18. The two teams played three, 25-minute periods, before playing a 10-minute overtime and taking a set of penalty strokes.
Fleetwood led the Hoosiers with two goals on four shots, three of which were on goal. Redshirt junior Brenna Moeljadi also tallied one goal on four shots, while senior Lena Grote scored one goal on two shots. Junior Corey Brautigam netted a goal for the Hoosiers, along with senior Kelsey Kiper. Kiper also tallied an assist on Fleetwood's second goal, while junior Jaclyn Zamudio assisted on her first goal of the game. Senior Katie Griswold assisted on Moeljadi's goal.
The Hoosiers held a 3-1 lead heading into the second period with goals from Fleetwood and Brautigam. However, Miami's Kate Snyder netted the RedHawks second goal of the game to cut IU's lead to 3-2. Kiper answered in the second period to regain a 4-2 lead for the Hoosiers. Moeljadi netted her goal in the third period to give Indiana 5-2 advantage. The RedHawks answered with a goal from Christin Brightwell to cut the Hoosiers' lead back to two, 5-3, but a goal by Grote at the 63:24 mark gave IU a three-goal edge. Miami's Amanda Seeley netted what would be the final goal of the game for either team at the 66:37 mark, but IU's cushion was enough to seal the win.
IU outshot Miami, 13-12 and tallied 12 corners to the RedHawks' six.
Indiana will play its final scrimmage of the preseason on Saturday, Aug. 21, in Columbus, Ohio, when it takes on Ohio State at 4 p.m. ET.
