
Field Hockey Dominates Ball State, 11-2, in Preseason Finale

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana field hockey team beat Ball State, 11-2, in its preseason finale at the IU Field Hockey Complex in Bloomington.
Saturday's game featured two 35-minute halves and one 15-minute, golden goal overtime in preparation for the 2011 regular season.
The Hoosiers dominated from the start, scoring their first goal in less than two minutes as Brenna Moeljadi put IU on the board. That was followed by another goal as Katie Griwold scored off a deflection from her first shot at the 6:49 mark. Nicole Volgraf added to the tally with her first of three goals at the 11:46 mark, scoring off a corner. Emily Bowker followed that with a goal at the 13:47 mark as she took a shot off the right side of the cage to give Indiana a 4-0 lead. Danielle McNally got on the board at the 15:04 mark as she took a short pass from Bowker to score on the left side of the net. In the 24th minute, Volgraf struck again as she netted a goal off a corner, which was followed by a goal from Morgan Fleetwood, just one minute later, she took a pass on the right side of the cage from Brooke Borneman, shooting into the left corner. Griswold scored the final goal of the half in the 29th minute to give the Hoosiers an 8-0 lead at halftime.
Moeljadi scored right out of the break off a corner to give IU a 9-0 lead at the 36:39 mark. Ball State got on the board in the 47th minute as Devanny Kuhn scored off a corner. Volgraf netted her third goal of the game in the 61st minute as she took a pass from Griswold on the right side of the circle to score in the left side of the goal. The Cardinals netted one final goal in regulation as Tarel Teach took a pass on the left side of the circle from Tori Widrick and shot it into the right corner of the cage to make the score, 10-2.
Despite the score, the two teams played a goal-goal 15-minute overtime where Fleetwood netted a goal in the 74th minute as she took a pass on the run from Bowker and shot it into the left side of the cage for a final score of 11-2.
IU took 28 shots, 19 on goal, and was led by seven from Volgraf and seven from Fleetwood. Borneman recorded a team-best three assists.
Viki Green started in goal for the Hoosiers with Maggie Olson playing the second half and overtime, tallying four saves after giving up two goals. Ball State's goalkeeping crew recorded eight saves.
The Hoosiers open the regular season on Friday, Aug. 26 when they play host to Miami (Ohio) at 4 p.m. ET at the IU Field Hockey Complex.
