WINTER PARK, Fla. – Indiana fell on Monday night in its second game of the Florida Sunshine Classic to West Virginia, 75-64. The Mountaineers hit a season-high 10 3-point field goals to get past the Hoosiers.
Indiana (7-4) had four players score in double figures led by 23 points from Tyra Buss. Amanda Cahill had 12 points as Alexis Gassion added 11 points and Karlee McBride finished with a season-high tying 10.
After a sluggish first quarter, whereboth teams combined to shoot just 27 percent, West Virginia scored the first six points of the second quarter. Buss then hit two free throws before Cahill nailed field goal. Gassion then polished off an Indiana 6-0 spurt to cut the deficit at two, 18-16.
The Mountaineers then nailed three-consecutive 3-point field goals to stretch their lead to 27-16 at the 6:09 mark of the second quarter. Cahill silenced the run with a trey of her own and Gassion followed with a layup.
WVU (10-2) would build a 14-point lead at 37-23 thanks to a 10-2 run with just over three minutes remaining in the first half. McBride hit a 3-pointer to ignite a 7-0 Indiana run to end the half as the Hoosiers trailed by only seven at the break, 37-30.
West Virginia would again take a double-digit advantage in the third period, getting in front 52-39. The Hoosiers again string together a run to make it a seven-point spread.
As they did all night, the Moutaineers fired back, reeling off eight-straight points to make it a 60-45 score at the start of the fourth period.
A late Buss 3-point would get Indiana within single digits with under three minutes to play, but it was too little, too late, as WVU would go on to win.
Buss hit 11-of-12 free throws in the game and has now scored in double figure in every game this season. Cahill finished with a career-high four steals as she shot 5-of-6 from the field with four assists and a block.
Indiana will next take on Yale in Assembly Hall in Bloomington on Monday, Dec. 28 at 7 p.m. ET.
