TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – A late Indiana field goal drought allowed Indiana State to make things interesting in the final minutes inside the Hulman Center on Tuesday night, but the Hoosiers prevailed to hold on to top the Sycamores on the road, 53-50.
Indiana went without a field goal for the game's final 13:07 after building a 15-point lead midway through the third quarter. Some clutch free throws down the stretch from Jenn Anderson were key in helping IU preserve the win.
Tyra Buss led Indiana with 15 points as Amanda Cahill added 14 points with seven rebounds. Kym Royster was a boost off the bench as she tallied eight points and six rebounds.
The Sycamores jumped out to an early 12-5 lead midway through the first quarter before a Jess Walter 3-pointer ignited an 11-0 run for the Hoosiers to close the opening period.
Indiana added to that run, outscoring Indiana State 15-1 while holding ISU without a field goal for a stretch of 8:30 to build a 20-13 advantage. The Sycamores then cut the deficit to 25-21. A Cahill 3-point field goal stretched the lead back to seven before Alexis Gassion nailed a layup for Indiana.
Cahill ended the half with three-point play to help the Hoosiers close the half on an 8-0 run to take a 33-21 lead into the locker room.
In the third quarter, a Kym Royster layup gave Indiana what would be its biggest lead of the game, 46-31, with 4:45 to play in the period.
After a Buss layup later in the quarter, the Hoosiers went over eight minutes without a score. The scoring drought allowed ISU to creep back into the game to pull within seven, 48-41. A pair of Jenn Anderson free throws ended the Indiana drought with just under five minutes remaining to build the lead back to nine.
ISU kept coming scoring four straight to make it a 50-45 score with 3:03 to go. After another pair of Anderson free throws, Indiana State's Alexis Newbolt nailed a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to four.
Indiana turned it over on its next possession and the Sycamores took advantage scoring on the other end to make it a 52-50 IU lead with under a minute to play. The Hoosiers came up empty on their next possession and Indiana State had the ball for a chance to tie or take a lead.
ISU's Ashley Taia, who hit five treys on the night, had a look from 3-point range that fell short but was rebounded by her teammate Newbolt. Newbolt's put-back attempt also missed and Indiana's Gassion grabbed the board before being fouled to seal the Indiana road win.
Indiana will return home to host Samford on Friday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. ET inside Assembly Hall.
