WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Indiana came up short to Purdue on the road at Mackey Arena on Sunday, 63-53. The Hoosiers fell behind early before making a run in the third quarter. But a slow start offensively was too much to overcome for IU.
Amanda Cahill notched her fourth double-double in five games as she led the team with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Other double figure scorers for the Hoosiers included Alexis Gassion with 12 points and Tyra Buss with 10.
The Boilermakers jumped in front 6-0 in the early going before Alexis Gassion ended an IU drought to put the Hoosiers on the board 3:40 into the game. A Buss layup put IU within two, 6-4, in the opening quarter.
Purdue (13-2, 4-0) kept an arm's length lead and later used an 8-0 run to build a 22-10 advantage as the first quarter was coming to a close. Kym Royster hit a bucket in the final minute as the Boilers led by 10 after one.
Indiana (9-7, 1-3) cut the deficit to single digits thanks to a Cahill jumper and three free throws from Tyra Buss for a quick 5-0 IU spurt to make it a 27-19 Boilermaker advantage midway through the second quarter. The Hoosiers struggled closing the half offensively going the final 6:02 without a field goal as Purdue led 35-20 at the break.
Cahill scored right out of gate to start the third quarter before IU held Purdue scoreless on its first three possessions of the second half. But Indiana was coming up empty on the offensive end and couldn't seize any momentum.
Purdue built its lead to 42-22 at the 5:19 mark as Andreona Keys sunk two free throws. Indiana then started to feed the post as Jenn Anderson ignited an 11-0 Hoosier run over a 3:23 span to cut the deficit to nine, 42-33, with 1:18 to go in the third.
The Hoosiers outscored Purdue 13-3 in the final 4:41 of the third period to trail by 10 heading into the final quarter. Indiana limited Purdue to shoot just 3-of-17 (17.6 percent) in the third period.
Cahill again scored first to begin a quarter to pull Indiana within eight, 45-37, but that would be as close as IU would get until making it a 61-53 score on Buss free throws with 1:10 to play. Purdue closed the door by hitting 9-of-12 field goals in the final stanza to seal the win.
The Boilermakers had four players score in double figures led by 15 by Bridget Perry. Keys achieved a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards.
