BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Despite flipping the momentum halfway through the contest, the Indiana volleyball team (15-4, 6-3 B1G) couldn't close out a home victory on Friday (Oct. 24) evening at Wilkinson Hall. Visiting No. 20 Minnesota hit a blistering .412 across four sets as its new lineup begins to settle into place. The Golden Gophers took the top-25 showdown 3-1 (25-19, 25-19, 18-25, 25-19) in front of over 1,800 fans in Bloomington
IU's defense struggled to slow down Minnesota's high-powered attack in the defeat. It was the first time an opponent hit over .400 on IU's home court since October of 2021 against Michigan (.402). On the year, it was the first time a Hoosier opponent finished the match above .300 as a team. Veteran outside hitter Julia Hanson had a match-high 17 kills.
The Hoosiers' offense had a tough time in the final set but hit .286 (49-15-119) on the match with just 15 attacking errors. Senior outside hitter Candela Alonso-Corcelles had 15 kills as all three pin hitters reached double figures for the first time since Oct. 4, 2025. Senior opposite hitter Avry Tatum provided 12 kills.
Minnesota decided the contest in serve-receive, winning the passing battle against the Hoosiers. Both teams had 10 aces but the visitors spent more of the night in tempo. All five of Minnesota's primary attackers had at least eight kills. IU got service aces from six different players including three from freshman setter Teodora Kričković.
Graduate student outside hitter Jessica Smith had one of the best nights in her indoor career. She provided a career-high 13 digs, leading the way for IU, while picking up two assists and a kill. Kričković had her seventh career match with at least 40 assists. Alonso-Corcelles had a hand in all three blocks for the Hoosiers.
IU's weekend will continue with a visit from Northwestern. The two sides will finish out a season series that began with the Hoosiers taking a four-set win over the Wildcats on Sept. 24 in Evanston. Freshman outside hitter Jaidyn Jager had 17 kills in the win last month. If IU wins on Sunday (Oct. 26), it would be the best 10-game start (7-3) to a Big Ten season in program history. First serve on B1G+ comes at 1 p.m. from Wilkinson Hall.
