MINNEAPOLIS – No. 2-ranked Indiana saw its breaststroke group claim the top five seeds in the 100-yard breaststroke, highlighting Friday (Feb. 28) morning's preliminary session at the 2025 Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships inside the Jane K. Freeman Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota.
Indiana has the chance to extend its lead substantially Friday night with 19 finalists, 16 of those in championship finals. IU will also race the 400-yard medley relay, owning the top seed by 1.5 seconds. Coverage begins at 6 p.m. ET on B1G+.
Senior Finn Brooks led the breaststroke barrage with the morning's only time under 51 seconds, a personal best 50.42. His time makes him the second-fastest performer in program history and ranks No. 3 nationally this season. Graduate transfer Caspar Corbeau was second in 51.18, and senior Jassen Yep dropped a personal best 51.25 to come in third. Senior Josh Matheny was fourth in 51.30, and graduate transfer Brian Benzing took fifth in 51.59.
Brooks will swim a 100 back, 100 fly double Friday night after also setting a best time in the latter. The senior placed second in the morning heats of the 100 fly with a 44.75. Fifth-year senior Tomer Frankel placed right behind him in third with a time of 45.05.
After winning his first Big Ten title in the 200 IM Thursday night, junior Owen McDonald led the 100-yard backstroke field by a large margin Friday morning. His 44.50 – which missed the NCAA A cut mark by two hundredths – was over half a second faster than second-place finisher, senior teammate Luke Barr, who's 45.02 marked a personal best time. Freshman Miroslav Knedla will join them in the championship final from a morning 45.60.
