MINNEAPOLIS – Indiana took care of business during Saturday (March 1) morning's final preliminary session of the 2025 Big Ten Men's Swimming and Diving Championships as it eyes a fourth consecutive Big Ten title.
Indiana totaled 19 finalists on the final day at the Jane K. Freeman Aquatic Center, with thirteen of those qualifying for championship finals. In addition, junior Zalán Sárkány will represent IU as the top seed in the timed finals of the 1,650-yard freestyle Saturday night, one of five Hoosier No. 1 seeds when including the relay.
IU is poised to do well in that final relay, the 400-yard freestyle relay, after putting three Hoosiers into the 100-yard freestyle championship final. Sophomore Dylan Smiley dropped a personal best 42.09 to tie as the top seed with Michigan senior Gal Groumi. Junior Matt King was third in 42.12, and sophomore Mikkel Lee fifth in 42.20. Qualifying for the consolation final, senior Luke Barr was 42.41 to place ninth and classmate Rafael Miroslaw was 42.67 for 14th.
After finishing first, second, third, fourth and fifth in Friday night's 100-yard breaststroke, Indiana has the chance to sweep the medals again in the 200-yard breaststroke Saturday night with four of the top five qualifiers in the event. Seniors Jassen Yep (1:51.20) and Josh Matheny (1:51.47) and sophomore Toby Barnett (1:52.44) led the way as the top three qualifiers. Graduate transfer Caspar Corbeau (1:52.95) was fifth in the morning to make it four in the championship final. Indiana took the top four spots in the 200 breast a year ago and will have the opportunity to do so again.
Junior Owen McDonald can complete his individual sweep Saturday night as the top qualifier in the 200-yard backstroke, having already won the 100 back and 200 IM this week. McDonald went 1:39.06 in the morning, over a half second faster than freshman Miroslav Knedla's 1:39.59 that earned the No. 2 seed.
For the second consecutive night, Indiana will send three divers to their championship final. Senior Quinn Henninger (407.00) and Carson Tyler (400.30) finished second and third, respectively, in the platform prelim, and junior Maxwell Weinrich snuck into the 'A' final with a 325.15.
