FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – No. 2 Indiana has set four program records in five swimming events through two sessions at the 2025 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships following Thursday (March 27) prelims inside the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.
The Hoosiers earned seven finalists in four events Thursday, three coming in championship finals. Indiana is also entered in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The evening session is slated to begin at 9 p.m. ET.
Junior Zalán Sárkány opened the first prelim session by breaking an eight-year-old program record in the 500-yard freestyle. The Big Ten Champion in the event went 4:09.22, 2.4 seconds faster than his conference title time, to finish seventh and make the championship final. That was a significant rise for the team, as Sárkány was the No. 14 seed coming in.
After just missing out on a Big Ten record at the conference meet, junior Owen McDonald captured it Thursday morning in the 200 IM prelim with a 1:39.81 – six hundredths faster than Michigan's Gal Groumi last March. McDonald is the No. 3 seed in Thursday night's final, and senior Luke Barr finished 10th in 1:40.93 to reach the consolation final.
In the 50 free, senior Finn Brooks (18.86) and junior Matt King (18.87) both swam faster than the previous program record – Van Mathias' 18.91 in 2023. The Hoosiers weren't projected to score in the sprinting event, but Brooks and King placed 10th and 11th, respectively. Brooks' time was his first under the 19-second barrier.
Senior Quinn Henninger gave IU an important advantage as the top qualifier on the 1-meter springboard, the only A finalist among top team contenders IU, Cal and Texas. Texas and Indiana both advanced one athlete in the consolation final, with IU senior Carson Tyler placing 10th in the prelim.
