Indiana Finishes Session I of Big Ten Championships

EVANSTON, Ill. ––– After 120 wrestling matches, Session I of the Big Ten Championships is done at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The Hoosiers finished the session with nine wrestlers still alive in the tournament. All of them are currently in the wrestlebacks.
Jacob Moran (125), Angelo Rini (133) and DJ Washington (184) each advanced out of the opening round to reach the quarterfinals.
No. 8 Angelo Rini won in an 8-6 decision thriller in a regular season rematch over Ohio State's and No. 9 Nic Bouzakis The two traded takedowns to make it 4-4 and had the score at 5-5 in the third period after an escape for each.
Rini scored in the third on a takedown to seal it and advance.
No. 6 Moran scored on a late takedown to pull ahead of No. 11 Caleb Weiand of Michigan State, 9-8, and used a late scramble to protect the lead.
No. 9 DJ Washington scored three takedowns and didn't give up one against No. 8 Ryder Rogtozke of Ohio State to win by decision, 9-4.
In the quarterfinals, Rini had another exciting match. Against top-seeded Drake Ayala of Iowa, Rini opened the scoring with a takedown to go up 3-0 and earned a second later in the period to go up 7-4 early. Ayala would take control for a 13-9 decision win, though.
Moran and Washington fell to No. 3 Dean Peterson (Rutgers) and No. 1 Carter Starocci (Penn State), in their quarterfinal matches.
In the opening round of consolation matches, No. 13 Joey Buttler (149) defeated No. 12 Clayton Jones III (Michigan State) in a crazy match, 18-12, in sudden victory.
No. 12 Ryan Garvick (157) dropped a tight decision, 2-1, to No. 13 Luke Mechler (Wisconsin).
Five Hoosiers advanced on bye in the first round of consolations: No. 8 Henry Porter (141), No. 7 Tyler Lillard (165), No. 10 Derek Gilcher (174), No. 8 Gabe Sollars (197) and No. 8 Jacob Bullock (285).
After Session I, Indiana is in 13th place with 3.5 points.
