Hoosiers in the Pros Update
8/1/2025 12:22:00 PM | Baseball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – It has been the summer of Hoosiers as nine former Indiana baseball players have appeared in the MLB during the 2025 season. It is the first time that nine different IU athletes have all played in the big leagues during the same campaign. IU is one of two Big Ten schools (UCLA) to reach the mark this season.
Veteran designated hitter Kyle Schwarber is well on his way to another 40-home run campaign and was recently named to the Indiana Athletics Hall of Fame on July 31st. His former teammates Scott Effross (Yankees) and Kyle Hart (Padres) both returned to the show after extended absences.
Matt Gorski (Pirates), Craig Yoho (Brewers) and Jack Perkins (Athletics) all made their MLB debuts this season while four more Hoosiers became professional baseball players in this summer's MLB draft. Below is an August update on IU's former players – who are playing in affiliated organizations.
Note: IU's four summer draft picks haven't been assigned yet and are not listed here.
MLB
Kyle Schwarber – DH, Philadelphia Phillies
Season: .253 avg., 37 HR, 86 RBI, 101 H, 76 R, 9 SB
The veteran slugger is enjoying one of the best seasons of his outstanding professional career in 2025. Schwarber has 37 home runs through the end of July and a WAR (wins above replacement) of 3.7 – the highest mark in his career to this point.
The Phillies are fighting for another divisional crown and will rely on the power in Schwarber's bat over the final two months of the regular season. He's well on his way to reaching a career high in home runs (previous best – 47) and could hit the 50-home run mark with a fantastic finish to the campaign.
Tim Herrin – LHP, Cleveland Guardians
Season (MLB): 4-2, 4.06 ERA, 39 app., 31.0 IP, 30 K
Season (MiILB): 0-0, 4.50 ERA, 4 app., 1 SV, 4.0 IP, 5 K
After enjoying a breakout campaign in 2024, Herrin has continued to be a valuable piece of the Guardians' bullpen this season. He was briefly sent down to Triple-A but has still pitched 31.0 innings to a 4.06 ERA. Cleveland is just three games out of a wild card spot and will have a big finish to the season.
Tanner Gordon – RHP, Colorado Rockies
Season (MLB): 2-3, 4.85 ERA, 5 starts, 26.0 IP, 15 K
Season (MiILB): 1-4, 5.25 ERA, 12 starts, 58.1 IP, 47 K
Gordon made his debut in the big leagues in 2024 and has bounced back and forth between Triple-A Albuquerque and Colorado this season. He pitched six scoreless frames on July 23rd against his favorite childhood club, the St. Louis Cardinals.
With the Rockies well out of playoff contention at the beginning of August, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Gordon get continued run with the big-league club over the final two months.
Jack Perkins – RHP, Athletics
Season (MLB): 0-1, 2.75 ERA, 8 app., 19.2 IP, 19 K, 3 SV
Season (MiILB): 3-2, 2.86 ERA, 9 starts, 44.0 IP, 68 K
Perkins has been a revelation for the Athletics since getting the call in June. He's turned into an outstanding long-relief option at the back of the bullpen for the club. He's racked up three saves already and has maintained a 2.75 ERA over eight appearances.
Barring a late miracle to their season, the Athletics will miss the playoffs in 2025. The last two months could be a big opportunity for Perkins to prove he's a massive part of the future.
Andrew Saalfrank – LHP, Arizona Diamondbacks
Season (MLB): 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 6 app., 7.1 IP, 7 K
Season (MiILB): 0-2, 9.00 ERA, 12 app., 13.0 IP, 15 K, 2 SV
Saalfrank missed a majority of the 2024 regular season and the start of the 2025 season but has settled back into the Arizona bullpen. He debuted in 2023 and went on to pitch in the World Series that same season. It's been a long climb back for the southpaw but he's regained his footing with six scoreless outings down the stretch.
Craig Yoho – RHP, Milwaukee Brewers
Season (MLB): 0-0, 8.22 ERA, 7 app., 7.2 IP, 5 K
Season (MiILB): 3-1, 0.84 ERA, 29 app., 32.0 IP, 39 K
Yoho is among the three Hoosiers to make their MLB debuts in 2025. The numbers aren't great but the future for him in the Milwaukee bullpen is very bright. He's racked up 39 strikeouts in the minor leagues and could be in contention to make a jump back to the big leagues when the expanded rosters hit in September.
Kyle Hart – LHP, San Diego Padres
Season (MLB): 3-2, 5.29 ERA, 9 app., 6 starts, 32.1 IP, 21 K
Season (MiILB): 2-4, 4.73 ERA, 12 app., 9 starts, 51.1 IP, 45 K
The veteran southpaw returned to the big leagues this season after making the Opening Day roster in San Diego. He's bounced between Triple-A El Paso and the fifth spot in the Padres rotation. The club will need all hands on deck as it attempts to take the NL West crown. Expect Hart to play a role down the stretch in the MLB.
Scott Effross – RHP, New York Yankees
Season (MLB): 0-0, 8.44 ERA, 11 app., 10.2 IP, 6 K
Season (MiILB): 2-3, 8.82 ERA, 15 app., 1 SV
Scott Effross, who pitched on the 2013 College World Series team, returned to play after two years away through injury. He's bounced between the Yankees and their Triple-A team in Pennsylvania. The Yankees are another team in a big battle for a division crown. Effross, who's pitched in the playoffs before, could be a factor for the club down the stretch.
Matt Gorski – OF/1B, Pittsburgh Pirates/Los Angeles Dodgers
Season (MLB): .195 avg., 8 H, 2 HR, 4 RBI
Season (MiILB): .278 avg., 22 H, 4 HR, 15 RBI
Matt Gorski became a viral sensation when he crushed a 400-plus foot home run in his first Major League at-bat. After battling through injuries with Pittsburgh, he was released by the club. The Dodgers picked up the utilityman on a minor league contract and he's now playing in Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Triple-A
Matt Lloyd, UTIL, Springfield Cardinals (Cardinals)
Season: .284 avg., 50 H, 4 HR, 36 RBI, 24 R
Lloyd has been outstanding in the Cardinals' organization since being picked up last year. He has four home runs and 36 RBIs this season while batting just under .290. If the Cardinals fall completely out of playoff contention in September, there's potential he may get his cup of coffee in the big leagues.
Grant Richardson, OF, Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (Marlins) + Somerset Patriots (Yankees)
Season: .220 avg., 42 H, 9 HR, 32 RBI, 31 R
Richardson was released by the Yankees in May but quickly picked up by the Marlins. Miami promoted him to Triple-A Jacksonville at the end of July and is back on the verge of breaking through to the MLB. The Indiana native has hit nine home runs this season and 55 in his career.
Cade Bunnell, INF, Gwinnett Stripers (Braves)
Season: .162 avg., 29 H, 19 R, 7 HR, 19 RBI
The veteran infielder is back in Triple-A in the Braves organization. During a game back in May, Bunnell hit in the same lineup as former MVP Ronald Acuna Jr. Bunnell was a 40th round pick off of IU's 2019 Big Ten Championship team six years ago and has done a fantastic job working through the ranks of minor league baseball.
Double-A
Phillip Glasser – INF, Harrisburg Senators (Nationals)
Season: .307 avg., 99 H, 47 R, 4 HR, 29 RBI, 22 SB
If anyone deserves a promotion at the end of 2025, it's Phillip Glasser. IU's two-year starting shortstop has torn the cover off of Double-A pitching this season. He's racked up 99 hits with an OPS of .784. He's got 22 stolen bases and plays his prolific brand of defense in Harrisburg. Expect Glasser to see Triple-A Rochester by the end of the year.
Bradley Brehmer – RHP, Chesapeake Baysox (Orioles)
Season: N/A
Brehmer has missed the full season through injury.
McCade Brown – RHP, Hartford Yard Goats (Rockies)
Season: 3-2, 2.76 ERA, 17 starts, 65.1 IP, 89 K
The big flamethrower hasn't been able to escape injury through his first couple seasons in professional baseball. But 2025 has been a peak into why he was a third-round pick by the Rockies in 2021. He's been promoted to Double-A Hartford and has pitched to a 2.76 ERA over 17 minor league starts.
At just 24-years-old, Brown could be a future piece of the Rockies' franchise for years to come.
Gabe Bierman – RHP, Pensacola Blue Wahoos (Marlins)
Season: 2-2, 2.54 ERA, 28 app., 4 SV, 49.2 IP, 55 K
Bierman has found his calling as a bullpen arm in professional baseball. With the ability to mix pitches, he's worked a 2.54 ERA over two stops in the Marlins' organization. He's pitched five times since being called up to Double-A Pensacola this season.
High-A
Brayden Risedorph – RHP, South Bend Cubs (Cubs)
Season: 1-0, 0.35 ERA, 18 app., 4 SV, 25.2 IP, 31 K
No one from Indiana's 2024 team has enjoyed a better start to their professional career than Brayden Risedorph. The 20th-round pick by the Cubs is already at High-A South Bend and has an ERA of 0.35 over 25.2 innings of action. The native Hoosier has a WHIP under 1.00 (0.90) and 31 strikeouts to 13 walks.
Luke Sinnard – RHP, Rome Emperors (Braves)
Season: 1-4, 2.28 ERA, 11 starts, 47.1 IP, 57 K
After missing all of the 2024 season, Sinnard is back and making quick work of minor league baseball. He was promoted to High-A Rome in the Braves organization in May and figures to continue his fast rise through Atlanta's system. On the season he's got a 2.28 ERA with 57 punchouts in two stops.
Nick Mitchell – OF, Lake County Captains (Guardians)
Season: .284 avg., 57 H, 33 R, 23 RBI, 22 SB
Mitchell was traded quickly into his professional career but has settled into Cleveland's organization in 2025. He is the third IU player from last year's class to be promoted to High-A and has 57 base knocks on the year with 22 stolen bases. He's hitting .306 over 10 games with Lake County.
