CHICAGO, Ill. – The standard of the Indiana program is to play hard and play fast. The Hoosiers (8-0, 0-0 B1G) got everything and more from their team in a commanding sweep (25-15, 25-14, 25-16) of Stephen F. Austin on Saturday (Sept. 13) afternoon at Gentile Arena in Chicago.
Service pressure helped set the tone for the third game in three days. The Hoosiers compiled five aces to just two errors from the end line. Stephen F. Austin struggled to pass and it allowed IU to put up a monster block in front of the visitors. The Hoosiers racked up 15 blocks in three sets, led by nine from sophomore middle blocker – and birthday girl – Ella Boersema.
IU's offense wasted very little time getting going on Saturday morning. Freshman setter Teodora Kričković helped guide the team to a .395 hitting percentage (37-7-76). All five primary attackers had between six and nine kills. Senior opposite hitter Avry Tatum led the team with nine kills, hitting .583 on 12 attempts.
The seven attacking errors committed by the Hoosiers' offense were the fewest in a game since Aug. 26, 2023 vs. Radford (7). IU has had fewer than 10 attacking errors in four of its matches this season and three of the last four games overall. The team has gone six-consecutive matches hitting above .315.
Head coach Steve Aird has his program off to an 8-0 start for the first time in his tenure. Since 2000, it's just the fourth time that the Hoosiers have won the first eight games in a season. They are one of just three remaining undefeated Big Ten teams (Nebraska, Indiana and Michigan State).
The final weekend of the non-conference slate will take IU down to Bowling Green, Kentucky to play perennial NCAA tournament team, Western Kentucky. It will also meet Bradley in a neutral site match before Big Ten play begins in under two weeks' time.
