CHICAGO, Ill. – In its continued pursuit to grow the sport of volleyball at the collegiate level, the Big Ten Conference is combining forces with Discover to create a one-of-a-kind in-season challenge. The inaugural Discover In-Season Volleyball Challenge will begin with the start of conference play this week and will encompass all 18 programs as they navigate the remaining 20 games in the regular season.
During the month of October, each program will play select matches that count towards the Discover In-Season Challenge standings. All teams will play five selected matches with the winner determined by overall winning percentage across the choice matchups.
"Big Ten volleyball has experienced tremendous growth over the last several years, and the top-to-bottom strength of the league is unmatched in the sport," said Big Ten Conference Chief Operating Officer, Kerry Kenny. "Our commitment to growing the game includes finding new ways to elevate the competition for our programs and fans, and we're grateful to Discover for their partnership in this mission."
Some highlight matches in the challenge include a rematch of last year's national semifinal between Nebraska and Penn State as well as Indiana's match against Purdue at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The first contest in the in-season challenge comes on October 1st as Minnesota visits Michigan.
Head coach Steve Aird and the Hoosiers will begin conference play on Wednesday (Sept. 24) as they visit Evanston and the Northwestern Wildcats. IU's first match in the challenge will be a west coast tilt at USC on Friday, October 3rd (10 p.m. ET, B1G+).
