BLOOMINGTON, Ind. –––– As Indiana Football's Week 8 matchup at Michigan on Saturday (Oct. 24) approaches,
third year wide receiver Charlie Becker and fifth year defensive lineman Tyrique Tucker addressed the media inside the Don Croftcheck Football Team Room on Tuesday (October 20).
Below is a partial transcript of the press conference, while video of the media sessions can be found on the right sidebar at IUHoosiers.com.
On what made Charlie apologize to Coach Day...
CB: It was just a personal thing, I guess. I never really want to be on anybody's bad side. That's not my character at all. I saw my dad out there and kind of thought it was directed at him, but you know there's a place and a time, and that wasn't it. It's something that I've just been thinking about for a little bit, so, I decided to apologize to him and Ohio State.
On how the team reacted to the loss against Ohio State and if there's been any new fire lit under the team...
CB: I think after the loss, the guys were just a little pissed off. Anybody would be pissed after losing a game. We're really just taking it one week at a time. We're not looking at last week anymore. We're fully on the mission.
On why he focuses so much on blocking...
CB: I think there's a lot more that goes into being a receiver than being able to run routes and catch balls. We run the ball 50% of time, passing the ball 50% of time. So, 50% of the time, we don't just want to be a liability on the field. We want to be an asset, and Coach Shannon puts a lot of emphasis on our blocking, and so I know that's something we work really hard on, and just helping out our brothers because Turbo and Lee both do a great job in pass protection for us. So, you know we want to be able to get out there and help them break free and you know make a 12-yard run, a 30 or 40-yard run.
On why the defense ranks top 10–15 nationally in a number of metrics again…
TT: It's our mentality, our attack, and our relentlessness to get to the ball, and the way we play in a vertical style and an attacking style as a defense. I think that all sets up for those kinds of numbers.
On the mindset coming off the first loss since 2024…
TT: We still have everything that we're looking for in front of us, and we can't let that define us. We have to continue to get better and use that as a learning point. Not a negative, but try to use it as a positive, to fix the holes, fix all the errors that we made, ultimately get better from that and keep going.
On evaluating his own play this season…
TT: I feel like I can be better, and I will be better and continue to get better. I felt good last week, I felt good against Nebraska. The stats are going to come. Our defense as a whole has been really getting after it, so I feel like it's been great in that aspect. I'm always hard on myself as a competitor. No matter how well I play, I always want to get better. That's the chip on my shoulder that I walk with.
