BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana swimming and diving won all four decisions in Friday's tri meet with No. 25/13 USC and No. 20/NR Kentucky Friday (Oct. 23) afternoon inside the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
The Hoosier men and women combined to win 24 of 30 events despite missing a handful of athletes preparing for next week's USA Swimming Short Course World Championship Trials. Indiana swept the diving events and won three of four relays.
Miranda Grana led the way, sweeping her individual events and leading off the women's 200 medley relay victory. Grana swept the backstroke events and added a third victory in the 100-yard butterfly in Alex Shackell's absence. Kristina Paegle added two wins of her own in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events, and Lily Witte swept the springboards with wins on 1-meter and 3-meter. Seven different Hoosier women – and three freshmen – recorded events wins on Friday.
On the men's side, Toby Barnett represented "Breaststroke U" with win in the 100 breast and 200 breast. First-year Hoosier Gabriel Manteufel gave IU distance victories in the 500 free and 1,000 free. On the springboards, Mason Mankey and Josh Hedberg combined to complete the sweep of 1-meter and 3-meter, respectively.
A pair of first-year distance Hoosiers jumped up the all-time lists. Paige Downey became IU's No. 2 performer all-time in the 1,000-yard freestyle, setting a personal best time in 9:33.91 – her time just surpassing Lindsay Vrooman's best time from the 2014 NCAA Championships (9:33.94). In the next event, Manteufel went an 8:49.53 in the men's 1,000 free to become the No. 4-best performer.
