Stephen Harper serves as Deputy Director of Athletics and Chief Operating Officer for Indiana University, where he oversees the day-to-day operations of the department. Harper directs the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) and Revenue Sharing programs within IU Athletics, while also serving as the sport administrator for football, men’s basketball, and men’s soccer. He also spearheads the external leadership team, which coordinates fundraising, revenue generation, sponsorship, and marketing activities.
Harper’s day-to-day responsibilities include managing facilities and capital projects, human resources, compliance, sports medicine, equipment operations, event management, risk management, legal affairs and contracts. In Harper's time with the Department, he has overseen the successful completion of more than $100 million in capital projects that have transformed and modernized the IU Athletics campus. Major projects include the completion of the South End Zone of Memorial Stadium, which is home to the Excellence Academy; Wilkinson Hall, IU’s home for volleyball and wrestling; the Tardy Center, the home for IU’s men’s and women’s soccer programs; the Pfau Golf Course; and the Roberts Family Team Center for men’s basketball.
Prior to joining IU Athletics, Harper spent six years as an attorney in the IU Office of the Vice President and General Counsel. Harper earned his undergraduate degree from Indiana University, graduating summa cum laude, and his juris doctor degree from the IU Maurer School of Law, graduating cum laude. Before law school, Harper taught high school English and coached at Bloomington North High School. He also served on the summer faculty at Choate Rosemary Hall in Connecticut.
