Field Hockey Concludes Exhibition Play With Louisville

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -The Indiana field hockey team concluded it exhibition match with visiting Louisville this afternoon. The set-up differed from a typical contest, where today's action featured two 25-minute sessions followed by a 20-minute period. A simulated overtime session followed, and both teams ended the day with a shootout.
Throughout the day's sessions, both teams would find the back of the net four times apiece. Indiana outshot its opponent 13-10, but the Cardinals would earn eight corners to IU's two.
The Cardinals struck first in the ninth minute of action on Victoria Stratton's goal off a pass from the top of the circle, but Indiana freshman Kate Barber netted the equalizer in the 14th minute unassisted.
After the first 25-minute session complete and the game knotted at one, Indiana took its first lead of the day thanks to an unassisted shot off the stick of Kayla Cunningham. The Cardinals would answer back with a Jennifer Pels' goal in the 49th minute, leaving the contest tied through two complete periods.
In the third session of play, Louisville's Alyssa Voelmle pushed the visiting squad ahead, 3-2. The Cardinals next goal occurred after a ball pushed from outside the circle deflected off of an IU player and rolled into the cage. Indiana chipped away at its two-goal deficit in the 73rd minute when Corinne Karch found the back of the net off of a pass from Audra Heilman to set the score at 4-3.
After three complete sessions, both teams entered a simulated 10-minute overtime scenario. The Hoosiers wasted no time to seek the golden goal, as Mollie Getzfread corralled a saved shot and fired it back between the posts to end the overtime period.
Overtime was followed by two shootouts, the first a best-of-five, and the second a sudden victory round. Louisville would take the best-of-five, 3-2, but Indiana's Heilman would convert on their first attempt in the sudden victory session to give the round to Indiana.
The Hoosiers regular season kicks off Friday, August 30 for a 3 p.m. ET contest at Duke.
