
IU Bounces Back to Top Austin Peay, 90-58

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Indiana used an explosive third quarter to down Austin Peay on Saturday, 90-58, as part of the Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament. The Hoosiers shot 70.4 percent in the second half and outscored APSU 34-11 in the third period to help bounce back from a tough loss on Friday.
Tyra Buss led Indiana with 23 points on the afternoon. Amanda Cahill added 15 points as Alexis Gassion tallied 13 and Jenn Anderson rounded out IU's double-digit scorers with 10.
Indiana shot 51.5 percent for the game from the field, including hitting 19-of-27 shots in the second half. IU also took care of the basketball with just six turnovers in the game while converting 14 Austin Peay turnovers into 22 points.
APSU played a solid first frame using a 10-2 run midway through to help take a 16-13 edge at the end of the opening period. IU responded by scoring the first six points of the second quarter to build a 19-16 edge.
Austin Peay regained the lead at 20-19 before a Cahill layup put Indiana back on top for good. Buss then scored IU's next five points, three of those coming from a steal by Tyshee Towner who found Buss on the break for a layup while being fouled. She then completed the three-point play with a free throw to make it a 26-20 Indiana lead.
Cahill then connected on another field goal before Jess Walter drained a 3-pointer to cap a 12-0 Hoosier run as IU led 31-20 with 3:51 to go in the half. Indiana went on to take a 34-29 lead into the halftime break.
The Hoosiers came to work in the third quarter, starting the frame with an 8-0 run to take a 42-29 lead. Buss had a stretch in the quarter where she scored nine-consecutive points for Indiana and Kym Royster later scored five in a row as Indiana led 59-40 at the 3:36 mark.
Indiana ended the third period outscoring Austin Peay 14-0 in the final 3:50 to take a commanding 68-40 lead into the fourth quarter.
The final period was much of the same as Indiana as IU outscored APSU 22-18.
Everyone on the active Indiana roster scored during the game for the first time this season as IU dished for 17 assists on its 34 made field goals.
Buss shot 8-of-14 from the field and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line to go along with five assists. Gassion shot 6-of-12 overall and led IU with six assists.
Cahill continued her strong start to the year, shooting 7-of-13 from the field and had a team-leading seven boards with two steals and a block. Anderson was strong off the bench as she hit 4-of-5 field goals with two blocks.
Indiana will return to Assembly Hall on Wednesday, Dec. 2 to take on Georgia Tech at 7 p.m. ET as part of the annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
