GEORGIA TECH AT A GLANCE
Georgia Tech arrives in Bloomington fresh off a Thanksgiving trip to Cancun, Mexico where it lost a tough one to Northern Iowa, 61-58, before bouncing back to down High Point, 81-61. So far on the year, GT is using its size advantage to dominate the boards, outrebounding opponents by a plus-11.6 margin while grabbing 43.7 rebounds per game as a team. Aaliyah Whiteside leads the Yellow Jacket offensive attack as she is scoring 21.6 points per game. Down low, Roddreka Rogers is shooting 56.1 percent from the field while grabbing 7.1 rebounds per game to lead the team in both categories while scoring 11.9 points per contest.
HOOSIERS BATTLING STIFF COMPETITION FROM THE START
With Wednesday's matchup with Georgia Tech, it will mark the fifth time in seven games that Indiana has taken on an opponent who played in the postseason a year ago, including four NCAA Tournament teams. IU is the only team in the Big Ten to have played at least four NCAA teams from last year in the first five games played of 2015-16 and the Hoosiers are the only team in the conference to open the year with three-straight NCAA Tourney foes. Georgia Tech appeared in the WNIT last year.
HOOSIER EFFICIENCY
Through six games, Indiana has shot 50 percent or better from the field in four games, a feat accomplished just five times for the entire season a year ago. Last time out, IU shot 51.5 percent in a convincing win over Austin Peay. At IPFW on Nov. 24, IU shot a season-high 56.8 percent from the field.
At then-No. 19 DePaul, the Hoosiers shot its best percentage against a ranked opponent in over 18 years, hitting 54.9 percent from the field. The last time Indiana shot at least that percentage from the field against a ranked foe was Jan. 10, 1997 against Penn State, hitting 62.7 percent from the field in that game.
THE BUSS IS ROLLING
Indiana's returning leader in scoring, steals and assists has started where she left off last year. Through six games, sophomore Tyra Buss leads IU with 18.8 points and 4.3 assists per game and is second on the team with 1.3 steals per contest. She has scored in double figures in every contest.
Buss has scored 21 or more points three times this year, including a career-high 29 points at IPFW on Nov. 24. In that game, she shot 7-of-14 from the field and 14-of-18 from the free throw line to go along with four rebounds and three assists. Her 14 made free throws tied for the sixth-most ever hit in a single game in IU history.
Her other 20-point outbursts came against Austin Peay in Nashville on Nov. 28 when she had 23 points and also in the season opener vs. Tennessee State where she finished with 21. For the year, Buss is shooting 75.4 percent from the free throw line.
CLIMBING TO THE CA-HILL TOP
Amanda Cahill has been lighting it up in the early part of 2015-16. The sophomore is shooting 61.1 percent from the field through six games and 53.3 percent from 3-point range. She has scored in double figures five times and leads the team with 7.7 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game to go along with 13.8 points per contest. Cahill has shot 70 percent or better from the field in two games and 66.7 percent or better four times.
Last time out vs. Austin Peay, Cahill tallied 15 points on 7-of-13 shooting with seven rebounds and two steals. She shot 5-of-7 from the field against Ohio in Nashville on Nov. 27, finishing with 14 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.
She was one of six players named to the All-Preseason WNIT Team at the conclusion of the tournament on Nov. 22. Cahill scored in double figures in all three games for the Hoosiers in the tournament and led IU in rebounding in every contest. In the season opening win over Tennessee State on Nov. 13, Cahill tallied 17 points with eight rebounds, a career-high tying four assists and two steals while shooting 7-of-9 from the field and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. She followed that performance with 13 points and seven boards in Indiana's defeat of No. 24 Chattanooga on Nov. 17. In the semifinals at No. 19 DePaul on Nov. 19, the Clyde, Ohio, native led IU with 15 points, eight rebounds and two blocks to go along with a pair of steals. She went 6-of-9 from the field against the Blue Demons and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.
HIT THE GASSION PEDAL
Alexis Gassion is averaging 11.7 points and 6.2 rebounds per game so far in 2015-16. Last time out against Austin Peay, Gassion tallied 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting with a career-high tying six assists with four rebounds and a steal. She scored a season-high 20 points in the win at IPFW on Nov. 24, going 7-of-11 from the field with eight rebounds and a block. She has scored in double figures in four games this year and 27 times in her career.
Last season, Gassion played in all 31 games, starting in the final 16. She averaged 8.0 points per game and was second on the team with 6.1 rebounds per contest. Gassion tallied 10 or more points 10 times and double-digit rebounds four times with a pair of double-doubles. The Fairborn, Ohio, native shot 44.9 percent from the field, 77.0 percent from the free throw line and 34.8 percent from 3-point range.
ROAD WARRIORS
For the first time since 2008, the Indiana women's basketball team played four-consecutive games away from Bloomington. The Hoosiers were sent to DePaul in Chicago for the semifinals of the Preseason WNIT on Nov. 19 and played at IPFW on Nov. 24. IU then played a pair of games in the Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament in Nashville, Tenn. on Nov. 27-28.
The Hoosiers are in the middle of a stretch where they will play seven out of nine games away from Assembly Hall and looking farther ahead, 10 out of 14 away from Bloomington.
HITTING THE FREE ONES AT IPFW
At IPFW on Nov. 24, Indiana nailed 27-of-38 free throws to help seal the road victory. The 38 attempts are the fifth-most attempts ever in a single game in program history. The free throws made and attempted totals coincidentally are the most by an IU team since Nov. 12, 2013 when the Hoosiers last played at IPFW where they hit 29-of-40 from the charity stripe.
JENN FROM THE BLOCK
Junior Jenn Anderson is still working her way back from preseason injuries and sickness, but the results are starting to show. Anderson scored 10 points last time out vs. Austin Peay and added two blocks while shooting 4-of-5 from the field. For the year, she is shooting 83.3 percent from the field (15-of-18).
As a sophomore, Anderson ranked fourth in the Big Ten in field goal percentage in 2014-15, shooting 56.0 percent. Her field goal percentage was the highest percentage by an IU player for a single year since 1997-98. She appeared in 30 games and made 28 starts last year while averaging 7.9 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. Anderson also nailed 72.1 percent of her free throw attempts.
From her freshman to sophomore year, Anderson saw major improvement in scoring (+4.5 ppg), field goal percentage (+10.2 percent), free throw percentage (+25 percent) as well as rebounds, steals and blocks.
PLAYING THE RANKED ONES
With the 54-43 win over No. 24 Chattanooga on Nov. 17, it marked Indiana's first win over a ranked non-conference opponent since downing No. 24/19 Nebraska (prior to joining Big Ten) on Dec. 5, 2010. The victory over UTC also gave Teri Moren her second win over a ranked foe as head coach at Indiana as the Hoosiers defeated No. 24 Michigan State, 70-51, on Dec. 31, 2014 in Assembly Hall.
After the win over Chattanooga, IU took on No. 19 DePaul in Chicago, marking the first time since 2009 that the Hoosiers faced ranked opponents in non-Big Ten play in consecutive games.
LEIKEM TO GRADUATE IN 2016
Lyndsay Leikem got her final season in Bloomington started in style as she just missed a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds against Tennessee State on Nov. 13 to go along with a career-high three steals. The senior shot 4-of-7 from the field and added a pair of assists. In the Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament, Leikem skied for a season-high nine rebounds against Ohio and then went 3-of-3 from the field in the win over Austin Peay to tally seven points.
Leikem is entering her third year with Indiana women's basketball, but will graduate from IU in May 2016 with degrees in criminal justice and psychology. She plans to move to the Washington, D.C. area after graduating to pursue a career with the FBI.
Leikem appeared in 29 contests in 2014-15 as a sophomore. She connected on 83.3 percent of her free throw attempts and averaged 2.7 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. As a freshman, Leikem averaged 4.7 points and 2.8 rebounds per game while shooting 44.0 percent from the field and 91.7 percent from the free throw line.
ROYSTER TO THE RESCUE
Freshman Kym Royster is starting to see more minutes as of late. In the Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament, Royster skied for a career-high six rebounds in each game and had a career-best 11 points against Ohio on Nov. 27. She added five points in the win over Austin Peay and so far on the year, she is shooting 87.5 percent from the free throw line.
Royster was instrumental in Indiana's win over then-No. 24 Chattanooga as she scored six-straight points that were part of a 12-0 Hoosier run that sealed the victory.
