
Strong Third Quarter Helps No. 23/21 Miami Get Past Indiana

WINTER PARK, Fla. – A strong third quarter from Miami (Fla.) allowed the No. 23/21 Hurricanes to defeat Indiana on Sunday night in the Florida Sunshine Classic, 89-75. Tyra Buss led the Hoosiers with 28 points in the effort.
The third quarter was the difference in the game as Miami caught fire after the halftime break, hitting 11 of its first 15 shots of the period to outscore the Hoosiers 30-15 in the frame. The Hurricanes were led by a double-double performance from freshman Emese Hoff who tallied 26 points with 14 rebounds while shooting 10-of-13 from the field.
Buss also had seven rebounds, four assists and two steals while shooting 10-of-18 from the field for Indiana. Alexis Gassion and Amanda Cahill also scored in double figures for the Hoosiers as Gassion finished with 19 and Cahill tallied 15.
In the first period, a Tyra Buss steal led to a layup as she was fouled and she completed the three-point play to ignite a 9-0 run that gave IU a 22-14 lead at the 2:29 mark of the opening quarter.
The Hoosiers extended their lead to as much as 11, using a 16-4 overall run to make it a 29-18 advantage early in the second quarter. Miami roared back, scoring 10 straight in just 1:09 to cut the deficit to one. That would be the point spread at halftime as Gassion hit a runner at the horn to give IU a 40-39 lead at the break.
The Hurricanes came out of the locker room firing on all cylinders scoring nine straight to start the third quarter. IU answered with a Jenn Anderson jumper followed by a Buss 3-point field goal and free throw for a 6-0 spurt to make it a 48-46 Hurricane lead.
Miami then strung offense together again outscoring Indiana 16-4 over the next 4:07 to build a 64-50 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Gassion and Cahill nailed 3-point field goals on consecutive possessions to cut the deficit to eight, 75-67, with 6:47 to play. IU would get within eight on two other occasions, but each time Miami shut the door to seal the win.
The Hurricanes had five players score in double figures as they shot 50.7 percent from the field as a team.
Anderson added eight points for Indiana as Lyndsay Leikem tied for the team lead with seven boards.
The Hoosiers will take on West Virginia on Monday to conclude the Florida Sunshine Classic at 7:15 p.m. ET.
