Scire becomes Indiana’s ninth scorer this season
MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. – The Indiana field hockey Hoosiers battled to the finish but fell at Saint Louis, 3-2, in their final out-of-conference away game of the season. The Billikens (4-7) opened the throttle at the onset with all three goals in the first 18 minutes, gaining an insurmountable lead on the Hoosiers (5-7).
Maddie Latino netted her third goal of the weekend and ninth of the season in the second half, bringing her career total to 23 scores (t-5th IU history with Kayla Bashore). The Hoosier senior leads the team on the scoring tally and has found at least one goal in six games this year. Freshman Sam Scire scored Indiana's opening goal, her first of the season.
Sophomores Sheridan Weiss and Kelsey Giese each recorded assists on the Indiana goals. Weiss sent a pass cross-cage to Scire for her second dish of the season, while Giese collected her second career helper on Latino's goal.
The Hoosiers outshot the Billikens 18-9 in the contest, led by Giese's 11 shot attempts. Indiana also gained a 16-3 advantage on penalty corners with 12 coming in the second half.
Excited for the opportunity on their home turf, Saint Louis began the game with three unanswered goals in the first 20 minutes. They broke the tie after eight minutes, scoring on a rebounded save, and found another after 13 minutes on a follow-up attempt from a penalty corner. The Billikens netted the game-winner after 18 minutes played, an unassisted reverse shot by Julia Bakker.
Indiana got one goal back before halftime with three minutes to play in the opening period. Weiss drove from the right side and sent a pass to Scire, who tipped in her second career goal.
The Hoosiers went all-out in their second half comeback attempt. They drew two corners and four shot attempts in the first six minutes, eventually leading to a breakthrough chance. At the 42' mark, Giese fired a shot that hovered on the goal line. Latino's knack for being in the right place at the right time paid off, as she poked the ball across the line to cut IU's deficit to one.
Indiana kept their foot on the gas but were unable to find the tying score, earning seven offensive corners in the final 15 minutes. Ciara Girouard earned an opportunity as time expired on a corner hit, but her chance slipped outside the frame.
