Home weekend continues Sunday against Michigan State
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana's field hockey team suffered their second home loss of the season on Friday afternoon, 2-0, to No. 3 Michigan. The Hoosiers (6-9, 0-5) held firm against a potent offense, facing 27 shots in total, but they couldn't puncture the Wolverines' (12-2, 6-0) conference-leading defensive unit.
"I'm really pleased with the team's effort today, they played strong in a really tough match," said Indiana head coach Amanda Janney. "Every time they entered our 25, our defense did a great job to step up and apply pressure. Even though we were in our backfield for a little too long today, we were making some plays we weren't able to make in past weeks."
Senior goalkeeper Katie Johnson amassed 12 stops in her 70-minute shift, a career high for single-game saves. The mark eclipsed her previous career highs of 11 saves, most recently against Rutgers (9/22) earlier this season. Aiding the effort between the posts was freshman back Sofia Keen, who registered her first career defensive save in the first half.
"I knew what I was expecting going into this game so I asked for extra work throughout the week," Johnson said after her standout performance. "Because of that I went into the game confident in myself and my defense in front of me."
The game drew intrigue before it began, once the Hoosiers announced their starting lineup. The contest saw senior Cameron Gibson earn her first career start on the forward line; on the other end, Keen played her first career game against Michigan, the team she grew up watching as an Ann Arbor native.
"Sofia had one of her best games of the season," Janney commended the freshman's standout performance on the new-look backline. "As a freshman, she did a great job handling that high pressure situation alongside Nora Aucker and Kelsey Giese."
Indiana came close to being the first side past the post with Taylor Swope's aggressive play early in the first half. Swope intercepted a breakout pass on the edge of their offensive third, drove the play inside, and left an entry pass for Maddie Latino. Latino turned and fired another pass to the backside help, but Michigan's defense broke up the play before it could reach fruition.
The Wolverines broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute with a field goal on a fast break. Carly Bennett delivered an entry to Michigan's leading scorer, Meg Dowthwaite, who turned and converted from the center of the circle.
Indiana regrouped and stayed within one score for the majority of the contest, until Michigan found a late insurance goal after 61 minutes played. Halle O'Neill made sense of a scramble after Michigan's initial penalty corner shot to poke the ball across the goal line.
