The annual senior showcase will take place during NCAA Championship weekend
GILBERT, Ariz. – Indiana field hockey senior Maddie Latino will culminate her outstanding collegiate field hockey career with one final game in her hometown.
The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) announced Wednesday their selections for the 2017 Victory Sports Tours / NFHCA Division-I Senior All-Star Game, set to take place on November 17 at 7:00 p.m. ET. The game will take place on the turf at Louisville's Trager Stadium, the host site for the 2017 NCAA Field Hockey Championship, immediately following the national semifinal games. Latino was one of 38 selected to the roster headed to Louisville on championship weekend.
"It's a huge honor, and what a great coincidence it is that Maddie gets to play in Louisville," head coach Amanda Janney said after the announcement. "She's had a great career here and works so hard on the field, so it's an honor to have her represent our school and conference at the senior all-star game."
Latino becomes the 15th Hoosier to play in the NFHCA Division-I Senior Game since 2003, continuing a run of four consecutive seasons with an IU player in the showcase. Audra Heilman (2014), Sydney Supica (2015), and Kate Barber (2016) have represented Indiana in recent seasons. Latino joins Supica in having the unique opportunity to close her college career in a senior game played in her hometown.
"It's a fantastic game that the NFHCA puts on every year," Janney continued. "Our seniors have traditionally shown well there—Kate Barber scored, and Sydney scored a hat trick two years ago. I know our seniors take it seriously, so we expect Maddie to have a great game."
Janney and the Hoosiers know that Latino never takes for granted the opportunity to compete on turf, because she's given it all throughout her career. The Louisville native has led Indiana from the front with 9 goals and 4 game-winners. Latino scored a hat trick against Miami (9/10), a career high that earned a Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honoree.
Sunday's senior day game is projected to be Latino's 72nd career appearance and 52nd start. In that time, Latino has scored 23 goals (t-5th IU history), 62 points (5th – IU history), and 8 game-winning goals (3rd – IU history). Latino has earned two Academic All-Big Ten honors, a pair of NFHCA National Academic Squad selections, a two-time Big Ten Offensive Player of the week, and a member of the 2015 All-Big Ten Tournament team.
The game's 38-player roster will be split into two teams in the coming weeks, along with the announcement of the designated coaches for the game. Latino is one of 11 seniors from the Big Ten among the 50 overall selections, including the 12 alternates.
