Three Indiana seniors achieve milestones in their career finales
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Indiana's field hockey team fell in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament to eighth-seed Ohio State, 3-1. The Buckeyes (10-8) jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the second half with a pair of field goals to send the Hoosiers (6-13) home early.
Although heartbreak befell the Hoosiers after their season came to an abrupt ending, the players—especially the seniors—left Ocker Field knowing they left everything they had on the turf. Senior goalkeeper Katie Johnson delivered her best performance yet in her final game for Indiana, making a career-high 14 saves. That mark capped an outstanding senior season, her first as Indiana's full-time starter, for her 121 saves this season ranks third on Indiana's all-time single season leaderboard.
Senior midfielder Maddie Latino registered her 10th goal of the season in the 53rd minute to spark Indiana's second wind in the closing minutes. Latino joins elite company (Audra Heilman, Morgan Fleetwood, Lydia Schrott) as the fourth Hoosier to tally 10 or more goals in multiple seasons.
Latino's senior counterpart on the forward line, Cameron Gibson, delivered the assist on Indiana's goal for the first assist and first point of her career. And senior Abby Urbanek provided a composed presence in transition, especially on the wings, in her 10th start of the year.
The Buckeyes busted up the back-and-forth play after 10 minutes with Esther Clotet Alsina's opening goal. The Buckeyes lined up a shot from distance that flew to the left side boards.
Indiana gained an opportunity on a restart three minutes later. Ciara Girouard guided the ball from the midline to the goal line and slipped a pass back from Scire at the stroke spot. Before Scire could connect her stick to the play, Buckeye goalkeeper Liz Tamburro kicked it clear.
Ohio State ensured their lead in the 43rd minute after Johnson blocked Maddy Humphrey's first shot. With the goal exposed, Humphrey collected the rebound and struck a shot through the scramble for goal. Humphrey doubled her output in the 52nd minute with a tip-in from the left post on a penalty corner.
By that stage in the second half, the Hoosiers had flipped the script and traded blows with the Buckeyes, largely due to superlative hustle efforts from Latino, Ciara Girouard, and Rylee Pearson. Indiana drew a corner a minute after Ohio State's third score to set up a successful play in the circle.
Indiana fired a volley of shots on that corner and, after a save from Ohio State goalkeeper Liz Tamburro, the ball landed at Gibson's stick. She left a pass for the trailing Latino, who made a push and threaded her shot through the five-hole for her second career postseason score.
The Hoosiers complete their 2017 season with a 6-13 overall record. One senior, Latino, will travel Louisville's Trager Stadium to play in the NFHCA Senior All-Star game for a final appearance in her hometown.
