Johnson earns first career shutout and Hoosiers’ first ACC win since 2014
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Earlier this week, Indiana head coach Amanda Janney explained how she wants the end result of her style of play to resemble the philosophy at Wake Forest, her alma mater.
Janney's former head coach, Jennifer Averill, employs a quick tempo on offense with fast passing and finesse that pushes past opposing defenses. Averill, still coaching at Wake Forest, developed a style that Janney admires and hopes to achieve at Indiana.
On Friday afternoon at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex, Janney and the Hoosiers (1-2) found a way to beat Wake Forest (1-2) for the first time in program history, a gripping 1-0 victory to give Indiana their first win of the season. Sophomore forward Sheridan Weiss provided the heroics with Indiana's game-winner in the 59th minute.
"Wake is a smart, finesse passing team with a great playing style, so it was tough for us but we put together a good game plan to pressure them and their backfield," Janney said. "It's such a good team win because they trusted the game plan. We did a couple of things we don't normally do, but we were able to scout them and it worked really well."
Weiss showed flashes of creativity in the opening weekend, but her first career goal couldn't have come at a better time for the Hoosiers. Eager to break the stalemate, Indiana pressed Wake's transition play as the second half drew to the final minutes. Weiss jumped a pass from the forward line to force a one-on-one with goalkeeper Isla Bint, who stopped the first attempt. Weiss redirected the parry midair to send it goalward, giving the Hoosiers their decisive lead.
The Hoosiers upset required a formidable defensive effort, which started with senior Katie Johnson between the posts. Johnson recorded six saves in the first complete shutout and victory of her career, making two crucial stops after Wake Forest pulled their goalkeeper. Johnson's defenders blocked five shots, facing 15 in total, and Elle Hempt made a second half defensive save. Prior to Friday's shutout, Wake Forest scored seven goals over their first two games, both against preseason top-20 teams.
"It feels awesome knowing that I was able to do something like that and be a part of something so awesome, Especially getting that win against Wake Forest, our coach's alma mater," Weiss said after the win. "That made it all the better to score that goal."
Leading the shot chart after one half, Indiana started the game with a hunger for the goal. Ciara Girouard took the first of five first half chances on a corner hit, which required a save from the goalkeeper. Johnson stopped two shots at the end of the half, one on a defensive corner, to keep the game scoreless at intermission.
The Demon Deacons turned up the pressure with 11 shots in the second half. Indiana created just one shot, but it happened to be Weiss' fast-break score to give the Hoosiers their first lead of the season. Indiana endured Wake Forest's offensive effort down the stretch including five minutes of an empty net personnel advantage.
This victory is monumental in the scope of Janney's time in Bloomington. It's the Hoosiers' fifth ranked win since Janney took the helm, their first over an ACC opponent. Additionally, it's Indiana's first win over Wake Forest in program history and Janney's first career victory against her alma mater. Weiss provided Indiana's first game-winner by a sophomore since Nora Aucker's stunner in an upset over No. 6 Northwestern (10/17/16).
"Beating Wake Forest is huge for me personally," said Janney, who played field hockey at Wake Forest. "I have so much respect for Jennifer Averill and the program that she's built there. Even though we weren't able to get those wins last weekend, playing those tough teams really prepared us for the huge challenge we faced today."
