Indiana Closes Out Regular Season with Trip to Northwestern

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana Field Hockey team closes out the regular season with No. 6 Northwestern after sweeping a pair of matchups against St. Louis and Ohio over the weekend. Big Ten Tournament seeding is on the line Sunday afternoon as teams fight for positioning.

- This will be the 26th all-time meeting between IU and Northwestern. Each team has gone on a run of wins in the series. IU won four straight from 2005-2007 and Northwestern has recorded five straight victories dating back to 2017.
- IU's last win in the series came in a 2-1 victory in Bloomington in 2016.
- Northwestern comes into the regular season's final weekend after having nearly two weeks off. On Friday, the Wildcats will head to Iowa City to take on the nation's number-one team and Big Ten Regular Season Champions Iowa.
- The Wildcats have a pair of ten-goal scorers in redshirt junior Bente Baekers (16) and graduate student Clara Roth (10). Northwestern is a veteran team. Three of its five goal scorers are in their final year of college. Sophomore goalie Annabel Skubisz is 10-4 on the season with a 1.21 GAA and two shutouts.
- IU spent the entire 2020-2021 spring season on the road in Head Coach Kayla Bashore's second year in charge. The Hoosiers finished the campaign 1-14 overall and in conference play. Then-junior Peyton Becker's overtime winner on April 15th at Michigan State gave IU its first victory of the season.
- The Big Ten Conference named its Preseason Honorees on Wednesday, August 25th. Senior Hailey Couch, Senior Mary Kate Kesler and Freshman Kira Curland were named to the list for Indiana.
- Mary Kate Kesler returns as last year's leading point scorer. The Louisville native scored seven points in a condensed-spring season.
- After opting out for health and safety concerns, Hailey Couch returns to action as the team's active goal scorer. In her sophomore season, Couch bagged 10 goals enroute to Second Team All-Big Ten honors.
- Senior Jes McGivern (63), junior Kennedy Reardon (50) and senior Peyton Becker (38) have each also played 35-plus matches in an IU uniform.
- IU's 4-1 start was the best five-game start to a season since starting 5-0 in 2014.
- The seven goals scored on the opening weekend matched the most IU's scored in its first two games since scoring nine goals in the first two matches of 2014.
- IU's 17 penalty corners against Richmond were the most in a game since it had 17 against Northwestern on November 4, 2005.
- Goalkeeper Arabella Loveridge has nine victories in 17 appearences this season.
- Midfielder Kira Curland has scored a team-high seven goals in 18 games this season.
- Forward Kayla Kiwak (2) and midfielders Sofia Arrebola Garcia (2) and Maggie Carter (3) have also scored for IU this season.
- Curland's seven goals are the most by an IU freshman in a single season since Frederique Meeuwsen scored 10 in 2004.
- Arrebola Garcia's and Curland's six assists are the most in a single season by an IU player since Mollie Getzfread had nine in 2016.
- Freshmen have combined for 50 points for IU this season.
- Curland is T-1st in goals by a Big Ten Freshman (7), T-1st in assists by a Big Ten Freshman (6) and 1st in points by a Big Ten Freshman (20).
- Loveridge is the only starting freshman goalie in the Big Ten and has held a 1.71 GAA against the nation's most elite offenses.
- Curland was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on October 26th. It was IU's first weekly award since 2017 and first conference freshman of the week award since 2015.
- IU has played nine ranked opponents this season. The Hoosiers are 2-7 so far against Top-25 teams with a wins over No. 21 Miami and No. 16 Ohio State
- Seven of the nine teams in the Big Ten are ranked in the NFHCA Coaches' Poll released on October 26th.
- 9 of IU's 19 opponents are in the latest version of the NFHCA Coaches' Poll. IU will play the top seven teams in this week's poll.
- Sydney Keld, Mary Kate Kesler and Yip van Wonderen have helped anchor the defense for IU. While leading the Hoosiers to 10 victories, the trio has also scored 24 points and poured in 74 shots.
- IU has recorded seven shutout victories this season. That's the most in a single season in program history.
- Against Ball State, Arabella Loveridge recorded her fourth clean sheet of the season. That breaks the program record for most shutouts by a goalie in a single season. Her shutout of Ohio extended that record to six in a season.
- The ranked win over No. 21 Miami (OH) was the first ranked victory for IU since beating No. 15 Wake Forest on Sept. 1, 2017.
- IU's 3-1 victory over No. 16 Ohio State on Oct. 8, 2021, was the first top-20 ranked road win for the program since beating No.12 Michigan in Ann Arbor on Oct. 14, 2016.
- This is the first time since 2005 that IU has recorded two-ranked road victories in a single season.
- IU's 5-0 victory over Michigan State on October 15, 2021, was the biggest conference win in program history.
- The seven goals scored against St. Louis on October 22, 2021, is the most in a single game since 9/5/13 against St. Louis (7).
- The Hoosiers had seven different goal scorers against St. Louis on October 22, 2021. That's the most in a single game since seven players scored against St. Louis on 9/5/13.
- IU's 30 shots against the Spartans were the most recorded in a single game since firing 34 against St. Louis on September 5, 2013.
- Kira Curland's three assists against St. Louis on October 22, 2021, tied a program record for assists in a single game.
- IU made its season debut in the Top-25 of the RPI on October 18, 2021.
- IU celebrated its senior class on Friday before the matchup with St. Louis. Peyton Becker, Hailey Couch, Mary Kate Kesler and Jes McGivern were all honored.
- The four have combined for 220 appearances, 154 starts, 25 goals and 7 assists over the past four years at IU.
- Against Michigan on October 17, 2021, Mary Kate Kesler became the 37th player in program history to make 65 career appearances. She has played in every single one of IU's games during her four years in Bloomington.
- Hailey Couch's 16-career goals put in her in a tie for 14th all-time in IU program history.
- Jes McGivern made her 60th-career appearance against Michigan State on October 15th, 2021 while Hailey Couch made her 50th-career appearance against Michigan on October 17th, 2021
