BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – No. 15-ranked Indiana rowing received early-season experience Saturday and Sunday (March 15-16) at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational on Lake Melton in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, battling some of the nation's top crews.
The team's weekend was highlighted by Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight victories on Saturday, leading a 6-5 head-to-head start to the weekend. IU raced No. 16 Duke in five of six races Sunday but fell to the Blue Devils in each. Indiana managed a 4-0 record against Big Ten opponent Wisconsin and was 2-3 against No. 19 Alabama on the weekend.
"This weekend was a good assessment for us," graduate student and V8 crew member Annabel Oertel said. "We were able to test a couple different things out, and we have a good understanding of what is working well and what we need to work on in the coming weeks."
"Despite the weather, we were definitely able to lock in as a crew and a team" V8 senior Lily Haupt said. "This weekend was a good starting point for us and revealed what we can continue to improve on during the racing season."
In both weekend victories, Indiana managed to finish almost five seconds faster than Alabama and 16 seconds quicker than Wisconsin.
The Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational originally scheduled three sessions, but Saturday weather conditions on Lake Melton pushed back the start of competition, allowing for just one session on the first day.
"In the 2V8, we had an exciting and insightful weekend," senior Mikayla Messinger said. "It was great to get our first races of 2025 under our belts, and we have a great starting point to improve upon during spring training!"
"This was a good starting point for us," 2V8 junior Caroline Schrieber said. "I'm excited to see how much faster are team can get. We're headed into spring break locked in and ready to go."
