Varsity Eight Highlights Friday in Florida

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – No. 21-ranked Indiana rowing's top boat led the way for the Hoosiers on the first of two days at the Big Ten Invitational Friday (April 18) at Nathan Benderson Park.
The Varsity Eight raced to two runner-up finishes, earning an 8-2 head-to-head record Friday against a field packed with ranked programs. The Hoosier V8 went 2-2 against ranked opponents.
In its morning race, the Varsity Eight held off a late charge by No. 11 Penn to place second to No. 3 Washington. The Hoosiers finished in a time of 6:24.039, two seconds in front of Penn, six seconds ahead of Clemson, 14 seconds over Notre Dame and 15 seconds in front of Iowa.
The IU Varsity Eight led for the first half of its afternoon race after a surging start. Indiana and No. 18 Harvard built open water leads over the rest of the field as the Crimson placed first in 6:25.956, just two seconds in front of the Hoosiers. Alabama and No. 20 Oklahoma came in just under eight seconds later, and Iowa and UCLA rounded out the field.
Indiana's 2V8 and V4 opened their weekends with third place finishes Friday morning, both holding off late Clemson charges for top-half finishes in the six-boat races. Only the ranked Washington and Penn boats finished ahead of the 2V8 and the V4 in the morning.
