BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – No. 16-ranked Indiana rowing gained valuable experience going into championship season, racing among some of the world's top rowing talent at the prestigious Windermere Cup Saturday (May 3) in Seattle.
Host Washington made the most of its home environment with a strong showing across its 39th annual Opening Day regatta. Indiana will have the chance to race the Huskies again closer to home when the Big Ten Championships return to Indianapolis in two weeks.
In the Windermere Cup race, IU's Varsity Eight got out to a great start, keeping in touch with Washington while holding a lead over the New Zealand National Team boat. The Kiwis pulled away in the next segment, and IU couldn't recover, finishing third. The V8 represented well in Friday night's Twilight Sprints – a 600-meter race kicking off the regatta – finishing second to Washington by two seconds, while holding off the UW Second Varsity Eight by three tenths of a second and the New Zealand boat by 1.1 seconds.
IU's 2V8 earned a head-to-head win over Seattle in the Cascade Cup race, finishing almost 36 seconds ahead of the hometown boat. The Washington second crew and its Novice Eight took first and second.
In the Varsity Four collegiate race, Indiana finished second among four boats. The IU crew's 7:22.627 was 17.9 seconds better than the UW Fourth Varsity Four and 31.9 seconds faster than Seattle. The Hoosiers held off Gonzaga in the 2V4 race to finish third behind two Huskie boats, its 7:39.422 coming in 82 hundredths quicker than the Bulldog boat.
