Mistakes Hurt Hoosiers in Series Loss
3/28/2026 7:30:00 PM | Baseball
Freshman pinch hitter Owen ten Oever gave IU life in the sixth inning with a three-run home run, his second base knock of the weekend. IU got within one run on a bases-loaded walk from sophomore shortstop Cooper Malamazian but stranded three ducks on the pond with a groundout from sophomore outfielder Cole Decker.
A brilliant sixth-inning performance with no outs and the bases loaded helped junior right-handed pitcher Jackson Yarberry give momentum back to the visitors. But his second inning of work didn't go as planned. Nebraska jumped him for seven runs, all of them with two outs in the frame. Redshirt senior right-handed pitcher Pete Haas came on and finally got the final out.
As it has been all year, self-inflicted mistakes cost the Hoosiers a chance to win the ballgame. IU's pitchers handed out 13 free passes (eight walks, five hit-by-pitches) while the offense was just 2-12 (.167) with runners in scoring position and left 13 runners on base.
IU will look to salvage the final game of the series tomorrow (March 29) when it sends sophomore southpaw Brayton Thomas to the bump. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. ET/Noon CT at Haymarket Park in Lincoln.

Inside the Box Score
• There were 27 free passes handed out between the two teams (21 walks, six hit-by-pitches).
• IU scored six of its seven runs in two separate innings – both three-run frames.
• Cooper Malamazian and Cole Dekcer each had multi-hit efforts in the loss.
Notes to Know
• IU walked 13 times in the ballgame. Eight of the nine starters recorded at least one walk while three guys were put on multiple times. It's the most walks that the Hoosiers have worked in a game since a contest against Fordham (14 – Feb. 22, 2025) last season.
• Sophomore outfielder Caleb Koskie recorded a base knock in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to eight games. It's by far the longest active streak on the team and is the longest in the career of the young outfielder. He has recorded 10 hits in the last 10 games for the Hoosiers.
• Sophomore shortstop Cooper Malamazian recorded his second multi-hit game of the series. He's up to 84 base knocks in 81 games of college baseball and has worked his season batting average back up to .287. In his two-year career, Malamazian is a .308 hitter for head coach Jeff Mercer.
