BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Can Indiana regain its winning ways to build momentum for next week's Big Ten tourney at Chicago's United Center, and perhaps beyond?
That's the plan, veteran forward Tucker DeVries says, and it starts with Wednesday night's last home game of the season, a Senior Night rematch with Minnesota at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
The Hoosiers (17-12 overall, 8-10 in the Big Ten) end the regular season Saturday at Ohio State (18-11, 10-8).
"We've said we're going to go down swinging," Tucker DeVries says. "If we go down swinging and it's not enough, then there's nothing we can do about that.
"As long as we stick together and give it our all these last few games, hopefully give ourselves a chance to be playing in the NCAA Tournament."
A four-game losing streak, including two at home, leaves IU in a must-win scenario. The good news -- the Hoosiers have beaten Minnesota nine straight times at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
"There's a short amount of time to go on a run," coach Darian DeVries says. "That has to be our mindset. That has to be our focus, just leave it all out there and finish the job.
"We have one more home game left. It will be a big game for us. We've got a Quad 1 game at Ohio State and then the Big Ten Tournament. Our focus has to be on the next one and find a way to beat Minnesota."
Hoosier success hinges on Tucker DeVries and guard Lamar Wilkerson. DeVries averages a team-leading 5.1 rebounds and is second in scoring at 13.8 points. Wilkerson leads IU with a 21.3 scoring average.
Wilkerson is coming off a 29-point effort in Sunday's loss to Michigan State. His 97 made 3-pointers this season are 10 away from Steve Alford's program record. He's scored 430 points in Big Ten play. That ranks fourth in school history behind Don Schlundt (459 in 1953), Jimmy Rayl (454 in 1962), and Trayce Jackson-Davis (436 in 2023).
"Lamar and Tucker are two guys that need to score," Darian DeVries says.
Forward Sam Alexis has come on lately and averages 8.2 points and 4.8 rebounds.
"Obviously, we'll take scoring from anywhere," Darian DeVries says. "Sam gave us a good lift (against Michigan State). All of that's going to contribute. But those are two guys that, for us, we certainly need them to be active and be aggressive and create opportunities not only for themselves, but for others."
During Monday night's weekly radio show with Voice of the Hoosiers Don Fischer, Darian DeVries added that Wilkerson and Tucker DeVries are "leaving everything out there. They're seniors who want to end their careers on a high note."
Wilkerson, Alexis, and Tucker DeVries are three of six seniors who will be honored during Wednesday's Senior Night ceremony, which is set to be held before the game. The others are Tayton Conerway, Reed Bailey, and Conor Enright.
"I'm incredibly grateful for this group," Darian DeVries told Fischer. "They've been a fun group to be around."
Minnesota (14-15, 7-11) has won three of its last four games. The loss was at Big Ten champ Michigan, 77-67. It beat IU at Williams Arena 73-64 in early December.
The Gophers have taken 732 3-pointers this season and made 255, which is 34.8%. IU has taken 847 3-pointers and made 293, which is 34.6%.
Minnesota forward Bobby Durkin made seven 3-pointers in last Saturday's 78-73 home victory over UCLA. He averages 10.3 points and has a team-leading 68 3-pointers.
Swingman Cade Tyson leads the Gophers with a 19.6 scoring average. He shoots 42.1% beyond the arc. Forward Jaylen Crocker-Johnson averages 13.4 points and 6.8 rebounds. Guard Langston Reynolds averages 11.6 points and 4.4 rebounds. Guard Isaac Asuma averages 11.0 points and 4.0 rebounds.
Because of injuries, the Gophers basically play a six-man rotation.
"They're a really good team," Darian DeVries told Fischer, "but they're just not deep.
"All their guys play into their roles."
