BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – No. 23 Indiana rowing closed its weekend at the Big Ten Invitational Sunday (April 19) on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, California.
IU's top four crews – the Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, Varsity Four and Second Varsity Four – all competed in five-boat races in Sunday's third of three weekend sessions, and each finished third or better.
Indiana had perhaps its best performance of the weekend in Sunday's 2V8 race. The Hoosier crew held off late charges from Oregon State and No. 16 Ohio State to place first. IU crossed the line in 6:37.188, winning a tight finish with the Beavers (6:37.841) and coming over almost three seconds ahead of Ohio State (6:41.158). The Notre Dame crew, which had previously defeated IU in March, came behind by 8.8, and Michigan State placed fifth 20 seconds behind the winners. With the victory, the IU 2V8 improved its head-to-head record to 7-4 on the weekend.
IU's 3V8 finished the weekend with a winning record, placing second to improve to 5-4 over the three sessions. On Sunday, only Ohio State (6:54.777) got the better of IU (7:00.794), while the Hoosiers finished 8.5 seconds in front of USC (7:09.322) and 35 seconds ahead of Michigan State (7:36.312).
Indiana's 2V4 also earned a second-place finish, beating the Buckeyes to the line by 1.2 seconds. The Hoosiers (7:29.332) kept it close with the leader, Oregon State (7:25.234), finishing four seconds behind. Notre Dame (7:34.624) and Michigan State (7:43.477) took the final two spots.
Indiana turns its attention to the 17th Annual Dale England Cup, Saturday (May 2) at the Dale England Rowing Center on Lake Lemon. The Hoosiers will host Michigan State and Tulsa in its final regatta before the decisive Big Ten Championships.
