COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Indiana University track and field team finished the first day of the Jesse Owens Classic on Friday, May 1, with several high finishes as they head into the final stretch of the regular season. 11 Hoosiers finished inside the top-five of their respective events with multiple personal bests being recorded on the day.
Assistant coach Megan Tomei said she, "told my athletes there will be people who PR today and there will be people who complain about the weather. Choose your destiny."
"I thought they competed well. A couple were sick earlier in the week and came back strong. The highlight was from Nikos (Sidirenios) who hit a nice PR. We've been working on being very disciplined throughout the throw. Much more to come from him and the others, but I'm happy with the direction it's going. Progress is key."
Day one started with a personal best from Nikolaos Sidirenios in the men's hammer throw. His mark of 62.84m finished third in the event and moves him to sixth on the all-time record list.
In the women's hammer, Bridget Beyer also saw a third place finish with her throw of 57.01 meters.
Rocklan Boisseau saw a strong performance in the men's javelin, throwing for a distance of 55.86 meters to finish third overall.
Kailen Kramer closed out the day in the field with her finish in the women's pole vault. Her height of 3.91m earned her a fifth place finish.
On the track, the day started with the men's and women's 400-meter hurdles. The Hoosiers saw third place finishes in both competitions, coming from Ryann Parrish (1:01.59) and Tyler Tarter (52.22).
Indiana saw three top-10 finishes in the women's 1,500-meter. Lily Myers (4:27.13), Michaela Quinn (4:30.01), and Catie McCabe (4:31.18) each placed second, fifth, and seventh, respectively, in the competition.
Kiera Davis and Aliyah Johnson stepped up in the women's 200-meter, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively, with Omema Anyanwu setting a personal best time of 25.15 in the fifth heat.
In the men's 200m, Kalen Sargent tied his personal best time of 21.03 to earn a fifth place finish.
