BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Amanda Janney's Big Ten coaching career is off to an unbeaten start.
The first-year Indiana head coach began her Big Ten coaching career with a 3-1 win against Iowa at the IU Field Hockey Complex on Friday.
Junior midfielder Kate Barber opened up the scoring with 12 seconds remaining in the first half to give Indiana a 1-0 lead headed into the locker room. Sophomore Midfielder Taylor Pearson tacked on an insurance goal in the 57th minute which proved to be vital, with Iowa scoring its lone goal two minutes later.
With Iowa (6-4, 0-1) pressing, redshirt senior Nicole Volgraf added Indiana's final goal in the 68th minute on a breakaway.
The win holds extra meaning to Janney, who was attracted to Indiana (4-4, 1-0) to begin with because of the Big Ten conference's prestige. She wanted the chance to coach in one of field hockey's most renowned conferences.
Friday, she showed she belonged.
"It was amazing," Janney said. "For us, we've seen some of the glimpses of amazing play throughout the game, it just hasn't come together until the last few games. For it to come together and for our team to play so well today against a Big Ten opponent, such a talented opponent, this is an amazing win for our program."
Though Janney was happy to get her first conference win, she was more pleased with how she got it.
The Hoosiers controlled possession for most of the game and could have scored even more goals if a bounce or two went IU's way, Janney said. Freshman goalkeeper Noelle Rother anchored the Indiana defense, making four saves and allowing one Hawkeye goal.
Friday's result has been a work in progress, Janney said. By most measures, it was the most complete game Indiana has played all season.
"I think everyone just came together on the field and implemented everything we've done in practice," Barber said. "It all just came together. We couldn't be happier."
Indiana's next test is carrying their momentum over into Sunday's game against No. 14 Northwestern.
The Hoosiers haven't won multiple Big Ten games in a season since going 2-4 in 2011 and haven't won back-to-back conference games since 2009.
"Putting two games together will be huge for us," Janney said. "I think, again, in order to do well in the Big Ten Tournament, you've got to be able to win back-to-back games so the pressure of us playing great on Sunday prepares us for the tournament."
But at least for Friday, Indiana could take time to celebrate Janney's first Big Ten win. After an up-and-down start to the year, Barber said the Hoosiers are pointed in the right direction.
"It's great not only for her, but for us, too," Barber said. "This is a really big step for us."
