Indiana will face some of the top competition in California, including No. 6 Stanford
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Hoosiers are back on the road for the second installment of their out-of-conference schedule this weekend. Indiana will travel for a three-game slate against Stanford University, the University of the Pacific, and the University of California-Berkeley.
Last Weekend in Louisville
Indiana opened the season with two games at Trager Stadium in Louisville, Ky. In the season opener, the Hoosiers downed Missouri State 5-1, scoring all five of their goals in the first half. Karen Lorite had a breakout performance in her first match on the offensive side of the ball, scoring two goals. Kate Barber and Maddie Latino had equally impressive performances on the attack, totaling one goal and one assist each.
The Hoosiers concluded the weekend with a game against the hosts, No. 12 Louisville. Indiana went toe-to-toe with one of the best squads in the country, but fell short in a 3-0 loss due to a three-goal run in 16 minutes of play. The Hoosiers showcased their diversity in this contest with multiple players playing out of their traditional positions, including Claire Woods, Mollie Getzfread, and Kate Barber. Noëlle Rother posted the top performance for the Hoosiers, converting six saves and holding the Cardinals to a scoreless second half.
Tackling the Top Ten in Stanford
The Hoosiers will open the weekend in Stanford on Friday, September 4 at 6:00 pm ET, against some of the toughest competition they will face outside of the Big Ten this season. The Stanford Cardinal are ranked sixth in the preseason polls, returning this season from a landmark year in 2014.
Stanford has already faced two of the toughest teams in the nation in the early goings. In their season opener, against No. 4 Syracuse, the Cardinal lost 2-1 in a closely contested overtime game. Last Sunday, against No. 5 Duke, the Cardinal won 3-2 in overtime.
On offense, the Hoosiers will have to keep watch for Stanford senior Maddie Secco. The midfielder has two goals through the Cardinal's first two games, including the equalizer against Duke. Indiana is 2-2 all time against Stanford, but the Hoosiers fell 3-2 in to the Cardinal in 2011, their most recent encounter.
Tango with the Tigers
On Saturday, September 5 at 3:00 p.m. ET, the Hoosiers will take a trip around the San Francisco Bay to Stockton, where they will take on the Tigers of the University of the Pacific. Indiana's game against Pacific will broadcast online via the West Coast Conference Network. The broadcast will be free to the public.
The Tigers opened their season with a 4-0 shutout win over Bryant, followed by a 4-1 loss to the Syracuse Orange. The Tigers will look to junior forward Leah Cofer for their offensive chances. Cofer has three goals to her name through two games, scoring two against Bryant and Pacific's lone goal against Syracuse. Cofer has yet to miss on a shot attempt this season.
The Hoosiers are a perfect 5-0 all-time against the Tigers, most recently winning 4-1 at home in 2013. Indiana seniors Sydney Supica and Rachel Stauffer each served one assist in their 2013 meeting.
Battling the Golden Bears
Indiana will close their weekend on Monday, September 7 at 3:00 p.m. ET against the California Golden Bears. Cal split their first two games of the season, losing 5-1 to No. 5 Duke and winning 7-2 over Bryant.
Cal boasts a balanced attack, and three players—Janaye Sakkas, Nicole Henriksson, and Bella Forbes—have split 12 points through two games. Indiana holds a 5-4 series lead over the Golden Bears, with the Hoosiers taking the last two games in their favor.
Homecoming for Fujisawa
Monday's matchup against Cal will take place at a neutral site, hosted by UC Davis. Because of the location change, Indiana junior Malia Fujisawa will play in front of her hometown crowd for the first time in her collegiate career. Fujisawa was a three-year letterwinner at Davis High School.
