Senior Day on Sunday at home versus No. 6 Penn State
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Indiana's field hockey team suffered a 2-1 defeat on the road at No. 24 Ohio State on Friday afternoon, their final regular season away game of the year. The Hoosiers (6-11, 0-7) held a one-goal lead after 35 minutes but the Buckeyes (9-7, 2-5) mounted a comeback with two goals down the stretch.
IU freshman Bente Buwalda got the game started by finishing her second goal of the season, with sophomore Sheridan Weiss providing the assist. Senior goalkeeper Katie Johnson made six saves to continue her conference-leading pace on stops between the posts, while sophomore Ciara Girouard added two defensive saves, a single-game career high, to aid the effort.
The Hoosiers received a spark from their attacking underclassmen after 12 minutes of back-and-forth in the midfield. Indiana's breakthrough play arrived at Weiss near the backline. Weiss sent the ball towards the goal, where Buwalda arrived from the backside and ensured its delivery.
The score is the second in Buwalda's freshman campaign; Weiss' helper is her third assist this season and fifth career point.
The Buckeyes equalized shortly after intermission with their first corner of the second half. Maartje Bongers received the insert and hammered a low hit to the left side board, pulling back to a 1-1 deadlock.
The Indiana defense endured an uptick in offensive pressure in the second half and received some major plays from Johnson, Claire Woods, and Kelsey Giese inside the circle. Johnson caught a reflex kick save in the 46th minute that came from just a few yards outside the cage.
Ohio State's attack persisted and eventually penetrated IU's backline in the 58th minute. Buckeye senior Maddy Humphrey one-timed a roller inside the circle for their first lead of the game.
