Hoosiers Meet Buckeyes in Big Ten Tournament

Winner advances to Sunday’s quarterfinal against top-seed Michigan at Ocker Field
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Hoosiers are turning the page on the 2017 regular season and begin a new season with the Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament. The new format spreads the entire conference into a two-week playoff; for Indiana, that begins in Friday's first round against eighth-seeded Ohio State.
It's a showdown from just a week prior when the Hoosiers and Buckeyes clashed in Columbus, where Ohio State emerged with a one-goal victory. Friday's winner advances to the quarterfinal round against top-seeded Michigan, currently unbeaten in conference play. Are you ready for the postseason?
"We've really emphasized that it's a new season now, so we came out with intensity in practice this week," said junior defender and team captain Nora Aucker. "Having just played Ohio State, we remember their tendencies and strengths and how we can oppose them."

Closing at Home
The Hoosiers ended their regular season campaign at home last Sunday, falling 7-1 to No. 6 Penn State. Sophomore Kelsey Giese scored on a play in the 61st minute for her fourth score this year.
Indiana saw the six members of their senior class play their final career game at the IU Field Hockey Complex: Cameron Gibson, Elle Hempt, Katie Johnson, Maddie Latino, Taylor Pearson, and Abby Urbanek. The group has combined for 142 starts, 40 goals, 29 assists, and 109 points.
"We couldn't be more thankful for the schedule we had, for the competition we've faced that will help us in this postseason," Aucker said, reflecting on Indiana's season with 11-of-18 games against top-25 opponents. "It's enabled us to keep our focus on one game at a time. Right now, we're only looking at the 70 minutes awaiting us on Friday."
Keeping Options Open
The Hoosiers have found creative output from several sources over the last three weeks, as seven different players entered the scoring ledger over seven games. Kelsey Giese leads the offensive effort in that span with eight points in IU's last six contests.
Hello Again, Buckeyes
By game time Friday, it will have been just seven days since the Hoosiers and Buckeyes met in Columbus, Indiana's final road game of the regular season. Ohio State edged Indiana, 2-1, with a comeback in the second half.
"We've definitely honed in on the matchups all over the field," Aucker continued on Friday's opponent. "With some of the switches we've made, we're making sure the players are aware of what to do in their assignments."
Bente Buwalda broke through with her second goal of the season, assisted by Sheridan Weiss. Katie Johnson made five stops while Ciara Girouard provided a pair of defensive saves, a single-game career high.
Who's Next?
The Big Ten's unbeaten top seed, No. 3 Michigan, awaits the winner of Friday's game between Indiana and Ohio State on Sunday at noon. The Wolverines boast one of the nation's stingiest defenses, earning 10 shutouts this season with only four goals allowed in eight Big Ten games.
The Hoosiers fell to Michigan, 2-0, at home earlier this season. Indiana won last year's meeting at Ocker Field, 1-0, by a late penaty stroke.
Weekend Homecoming
Friday's opening round matchup will be the first career game played by freshman Sofia Keen in her hometown of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Keen, a graduate of Pioneer High School, has three defensive saves (16th - NCAA) and 11 appearances in the starting lineup this season.
Worth Noting...
• Maddie Latino (9 – 9th) and Ciara Girouard (7 – 18th) rank top-20 in scoring amongst the Big Ten. Latino has four game-winning goals this season (t-3rd, Big Ten).
• Maddie Latino also entered the Hoosiers' all-time top 5 for career goals (23 - 5th), game-winning goals (8 - 3rd), and points (62 - 5th).
• Senior goalkeeper Katie Johnson leads the Big Ten in saves per game (5.94, 21st in NCAA). Johnson has 107 saves this season, the most since Noëlle Rother's identical mark in 2015 (t-4th, IU history).
