Hempt grabs second penalty corner goal of the season
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana field hockey team suffered their first home loss of the season to No. 9 Maryland, 3-1, with all four goals coming in the second half. The Terrapins (4-2, 1-0) converted on a pair of penalty corners to seal the win, handing the Hoosiers (4-3, 0-1) a loss in their conference opener.
Redshirt senior captain Elle Hempt led Indiana from the back, scoring her second goal of the season from a penalty corner in the 61st minute. Taylor Swope and Nora Aucker received assists on the corner play, giving both juniors their third dish of the season.
"I think our team played great today to get to 0-0 at halftime against a quality team like this," head coach Amanda Janney said after the game. "This is the level of competition we have to face in order to get to the top 10, and we need to be able to sustain for 70 minutes."
Goalkeeper Katie Johnson tallied six saves against 21 shots faced. The goalless first half was Johnson's fourth half this year without conceding a goal.
Indiana's midfield and backline held the Terrapins to just one shot on target in a gritty first half that saw most of the back-and-forth take place in the middle third. The Hoosiers found three chances that led to shots in that span, but only Maddie Latino's attempt in the 14th minute required a save.
Indiana gained another solid opportunity on an 18th minute penalty corner. The insert pushed to Ciara Girouard, who delivered a well-hit ball towards the cage. The shot took a deflection, nearly dropping past the goal line, but Maryland's defense cleared it away.
The Hoosiers endured a high-octane attack from Maryland in the second half, in which the Terrapins created 16 shot attempts and nine penalty corners. Maryland broke the tie just over ten minutes into the second half on a penalty corner after passing around the arc of the circle for an open chance.
"If we can limit our defensive penalty corners, we'll be in a good place," Janney said. "We're pleased with our level of play and hustle today, and we had some quality contributions and sparks of brilliance, we just have to have more of that to get more opportunities."
The Terrapins' corner inserter, Lein Holsboer, scored twice on second chance opportunities to put the game away. She found the game-winner with 17 minutes to play on a rebounded save and extended the lead in the 61st minute after making sense of a scramble in front of goal.
Indiana battled to the finish and busted their scoring drought with Hempt's corner score with 10 minutes to play. Aucker inserted to Swope on the stop, and Hempt drove her successful hit low and left of the defense. That score was the third of Hempt's last seven games dating back to the final game of the 2016 season, all from the top of the circle.
"It's frustrating to play this even between the 25s against these top 20 teams and not get results, but we're inches away from finally breaking through," Janney said. "Playing up to this level against the top 10 tells me that it'll be soon before we beat some more ranked teams."

A battle for statewide bragging rights awaits the Hoosiers on Sunday against Ball State, the only other Division-I field hockey program in the state of Indiana. The Hoosiers lead the all time series against the Cardinals, 11-5, and won the last regular season meeting in 2015 with a 4-2 score line. Indiana also won their preseason scrimmage against the Cardinals this year, in which freshman Bente Buwalda scored a hat trick.
The Cardinals enter this game with victories in their last two contests, winning 2-1 in overtime at Lehigh last weekend. They started this weekend with a 2-0 win over Saint Francis on neutral turf.
