Woods scores first goal of the season
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Indiana's field hockey team fell in overtime on Sunday afternoon to No. 25 Monmouth, 2-1, at So Sweet A Cat Field in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The Hawks (7-2, 0-0) clinched the win in the 85th minute, scoring both goals after the Hoosiers' (5-5, 0-2) halftime lead.
Claire Woods provided an encouraging note for the Indiana attack, scoring in the 19th minute for her first goal of the season and second of her career. That score was a bright moment for Woods, who notches her first goal since returning from missing her 2016 sophomore season to injury.
Elsewhere on offense, Indiana sophomore Kelsey Giese fired four shot attempts with one on target. Senior goalkeeper Katie Johnson tallied eight saves in the extended shift between the posts, bringing her weekend total to 19 stops.
The Hoosiers made great use of their second offensive penalty corner in the 19th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Giese wound up her initial shot that took a ricochet off of Monmouth goalkeeper Christen Piersanti's chest, but Woods put away the rebound from a low angle into the open net.
The No. 25 Hawks were inches away from an equalizer with ten minutes left in the first half. Their shot on a penalty corner took a deflection into the boards but the ball caught a foot on the way in, voiding the score.
Monmouth found their 1-1 tying goal at the start of the second half. A quick counter from the pass-back drew a penalty stroke for the Hawks, which Rachel Konowal delivered into the netting.
Indiana earned several chances down the stretch in regulation but couldn't produce a winning score. The Hoosiers earned back-to-back corner opportunities in the 64th minute, but Giese's shot on the second attempt found a block. Abby Urbanek cracked an attempt on frame a minute later that required a save from Piersanti.
Entering their second overtime frame of the season, Indiana drew the first penalty corner of the extra period at 74 minutes. Giese's shot was blocked, a fate shared by Rylee Pearson's attempt five minutes later.
Just as it looked like the game would head to another intermission, Monmouth found the game-winner in the 85th minute of overtime. Georgia Garden Bachop created space through the Hoosier defense to create a one-on-one scenario, and she drove her shot into the board.

The road stretch continues for Indiana next weekend, but they head in the opposite direction for two games in the Midwest. The Hoosiers open the slate with their third Big Ten opponent of the season, No. 19 Iowa, on the Big Ten Network. Both teams are seeking their first conference win as the Hawkeyes fell to No. 10 Maryland and No. 23 Rutgers this weekend.
After that, the Hoosiers head to the Gateway for a showdown at SportPort International against Saint Louis. The Sunday afternoon turf action serves as a homecoming of sorts for Woods (St. Louis) and Urbanek (Edwardsville, Ill.), who played on the SportPort turf during their prep club careers.
