Aucker’s untimed penalty stroke pushed the game past regulation
VILLANOVA, Pa. – Indiana's field hockey team suffered a 3-2 overtime defeat to Villanova at the rain-soaked Proving Grounds on Friday evening. The Hoosiers (1-2) opened scoring in the first half and came back with an untimed penalty stroke to force the extra frame, but the Wildcats (1-1) connected for the game winner in the 76th minute.
Junior Kelsey Giese and senior Nora Aucker became the fourth and fifth unique goal scorers, respectively, for Indiana this year. Aucker and Rylee Pearson each earned their first assists of the season on Giese's set play.
In total, the Hoosiers matched the Wildcats with 13 shots apiece and won the corner battle, 8-5. Goalkeeper Shelby Querry provided four saves between the pipes and the Hoosier back line blocked four shots in the field.
Indiana came out firing in the first half and opened scoring in the eighth minute. Giese dropped the hammer on her straight shot from the penalty corner, assisted by Nora Aucker on the insert and Rylee Pearson on the stop, to give Indiana the early 1-0 lead on their first attempt.
But the Wildcats didn't hang on their heels. Just four minutes after the IU opener, Villanova scored the 1-1 equalizer from the field.
The Hoosiers knocked on the door for the remainder of the opening frame, drawing three more attack corners with four shots on target. Sheridan Weiss found an opening after 21 minutes played, but the Nova back line made a timely defensive save.
Villanova took the lead midway through the second half on their 47th-minute attack penalty corner. Querry stopped the initial hit from the top of the circle, but the Wildcats collected the rebound and sent it into the boards.
Indiana persevered to the dwindling seconds of regulation, drawing three attack corners in the final five minutes. The Hoosiers even pulled Querry down the stretch and inserted Elle Hempt as a kicking back to bolster the attack. On IU's final, untimed corner attempt, Indiana drew a foul that set up a penalty stroke attempt for Aucker. The senior captain coolly delivered the stroke past the keeper to force an overtime period.
