Hoosiers ready for Stanford, Saint Francis in next weekend’s Hoosier Invitational
PHILADELPHIA – The Hoosiers ended their first full-weekend road trip of the year with a 2-0 defeat to Drexel at Buckley field on Saturday afternoon. Indiana (1-3) created their chances, gaining 14 shots to 12 from the Dragons (3-1), but an early strike from a penalty corner sealed the Hoosiers' fate.
"It's frustrating that our good play isn't showing up on the scoreboard," Indiana head coach Amanda Janney Misselhorn said. "Between the midfield, we're having some good combinations and passing plays but just not finishing on the attacking end. There's a lot of positives coming out of the weekend and a lot of good things to take away and build on."
Kelsey Giese led the IU attack with four shots, placing three on target, while Ciara Girouard created five shot attempts. Freshman forward Hailey Couch also provided a spark on the attack with two swift runs to the circle and fired two shot attempts, one of which required a kick save out of play.
"We acknowledged the things that we definitely need to work on: getting more sustained attack, playing solid defense, and all of the little things we can do between the 25s," said senior captain Nora Aucker. "Just cleaning that up and making sure that we look sharp, especially for Big Ten play. We want to make sure, facing two losses this weekend that we didn't want to have, that we move forward and make big strides from here."
Defensively, goalkeeper Shelby Querry amassed a career-high five saves and the corner defense stifled 9-of-10 Drexel penalty corners.
The Dragons took the lead in the seventh minute, scoring on the first corner attempt of the game from either team. They doubled their lead in the next half after 49 minutes played, slipping the attack to the backside of the cage for a close-range finish.
But the Hoosiers kept a lively pursuit for the goal to the final whistle, even pulling the goalkeeper in the 66th minute for a personnel advantage on the offensive end. That tenacity led to an earned penalty stroke by Girouard, but the Drexel goalkeeper parried the attempt at the high netting.
"Our poise and composure in the circle need to keep improving as the season progresses," said Janney Misselhorn. "We were getting some good chances, especially in the second half where we're earning shots and corners. We just have to find a way to put them in the back of the net."
