The Hoosiers spent last week on the road, their first weekend double away from home of 2018, with two games in Philadelphia against a pair from the City Six. Indiana dropped their game at Villanova in heartbreaking fashion, 3-2 in overtime, before coming up short at Drexel in a 2-0 defeat.
The Hoosiers and Wildcats provided an exciting contest on Friday evening. After IU got the opening goal from Kelsey Giese, Villanova mounted a comeback and gained a 2-1 lead. On their final attempt of regulation, IU earned a penalty stroke that Nora Aucker converted with aplomb. Aucker also recorded an assist on Giese's goal for the most single-game points by a Hoosier this year.
Big Beginnings
Indiana split their opening weekend results in the Hoosier state, falling on a last-minute goal by No. 8 Louisville in their home opener before shutting out Ball State 2-0 in Muncie. A diverse attack saw Claire Woods, Bente Buwalda, and Sam Scire earn their first goals of the year while goalkeepers Shelby Querry and Sachi Ananias secured the first tandem shutout of their careers.
Thus far, all five goals and five assists have come from different sources; the lone exception being senior captain Nora Aucker, who leads the team with three points (1g, 1a).
Crimson, Meet Cardinal
One has to travel back to head coach Amanda Janney Misselhorn's first season at Indiana, in 2015, for the Hoosiers' last encounter with Stanford. Indiana went to Stanford and took the No. 6 Cardinal to the wire, falling 1-0 to a 24th-minute Stanford strike.
The Hoosiers look forward to hosting Stanford for the first time since the 2007 season, when IU defended their turf with a 2-1 win. The Cardinal have won the two meetings since then and lead the overall series, 3-2.
