Indiana returns Sunday to host Saint Francis
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana field hockey team suffered a home loss to No. 20 Stanford at the IU Field Hockey Complex on Friday afternoon, the second game of the 2018 Hoosier Invitational.
KEY MOMENTS
• After opening goals by Stanford (2-3) in the 10th and 15th minutes, Indiana (1-4) bounced back on a 28th-minute goal by senior forward Claire Woods.
• Junior attacker Ciara Girouard drove the right side of the backline, through the Stanford defense, and dished a pass across the cage for Woods' tip-in on the left post.
• The Cardinal increased their lead right before halftime and capped their second win of the Hoosier Invitational with a score in the 43rd minute of the second half.
• Sophomore Sachi Ananias came up with two saves in the contest, including a deft kick save in the 55th minute on a defensive penalty corner.
NOTABLES
• Indiana out-shot the Cardinal, 15-10, and placed a season-high nine shot attempts on frame. It's the third time this season that the Hoosiers have registered more shots than their opponent.
• For the third time this year, Indiana gained more corners than their opponent with a 6-5 advantage over Stanford.
• Claire Woods becomes Indiana's leading scorer with her second goal of the season. The goal matches Woods' single-season career record of two goals in the 2017 season and it's the fifth goal of her career.
• The assist by Girouard is her first point of the season and second career assists. Girouard has 24 points in 44 career starts.
• Kelsey Giese matched her season high with five shot attempts and leads the Hoosiers with 14 shots in 2018.
QUOTABLE
"Our defense and midfielders are sending great balls to the post, so we're all just trying to crash and make the second effort to get there. I got lucky, Ciara sent a great ball and I was there for the finish. We're hoping to finish more of those in the future."
—Senior forward Claire Woods
"We really limited defensive corners as best as we could, made a lot of good switches in the second half and a lot of good side-back intercepts in the second half…It's nothing to hang our heads about. Hopefully we're looking back at the end of the season having improved on the things we learned here."
—Senior back Nora Aucker
"Right now, with the youth of our team, we're building things one step at a time. We're getting the shots now—to get 15 shots against a team like that is a great sign for us. We're hoping to build from there."
—Head Coach Amanda Janney Misselhorn
