Two Ranked Opponents Await IUFH in Ohio

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana Field Hockey continues a five-game road swing with two stops in Ohio this weekend. IU will be in Columbus on Friday afternoon to take on No. 16 Ohio State before heading to Kent on Sunday to face No. 24 Kent State.

- This is the 25th all-time matchup between Indiana and Ohio State. IU won five of the first nine games in the series, but the Buckeyes have won seven straight. IU's last win in Columbus came in 2015.
- IU and Kent State will meet for the sixth time ever on Sunday. The Hoosiers are 4-1 all-time against the Golden Flashes.
- Ohio State comes into the weekend on the heels of three-straight losses against ranked opponents. The Buckeyes started 6-1 on the season and are currently 1-1 in conference play. Junior midfielder Leanne Bough leads Ohio State with five goals on the season.
- Kent State had one of the hottest starts to the season in the country. The Golden Flashes started 5-2 on the campaign. They are 3-2 against ranked opponents and 1-3 against the Big Ten Conference. Kent State has six players tied for the team-lead in goals with three.
- IU spent the entire 2020-2021 spring season on the road in Head Coach Kayla Bashore's second year in charge. The Hoosiers finished the campaign 1-14 overall and in conference play. Then-junior Peyton Becker's overtime winner on April 15th at Michigan State gave IU its first victory of the season.
- The Big Ten Conference named its Preseason Honorees on Wednesday, August 25th. Senior Hailey Couch, Senior Mary Kate Kesler and Freshman Kira Curland were named to the list for Indiana.
- Midfielder Mary Kate Kesler was named the IU Scholar Athlete of the Month for September. As a full-time student athlete, Kesler has maintained a cumulative 3.9 GPA in her time in Bloomington.
- Indiana welcomed seven newcomers to the roster for the 2021 season. Kayla Kiwak, Arabella Loveridge, Yip van Wonderen, Meredith Lee, Kira Curland, Maggie Carter and Sofia Arrebola Garcia all come to Bloomington to join the program.
- Mary Kate Kesler returns as last year's leading point scorer. The Louisville native scored seven points in a condensed spring season.
- After opting out for health and safety concerns, Hailey Couch returns to action as the team's active goal scorer. In her sophomore season, Couch bagged 10 goals enroute to Second Team All-Big Ten honors.
- Senior Jes McGivern (55), junior Kennedy Reardon (44) and senior Peyton Becker (34) have each also played 30-plus matches in an IU uniform.
- IU's 4-1 start was the best five-game start to a season since starting 5-0 in 2014.
- The seven goals scored on the opening weekend matched the most IU's scored in its first two games since scoring nine goals in the first two matches of 2014.
- The ranked win over No. 21 Miami (OH) was the first ranked victory for IU since beating No. 15 Wake Forest on Sept. 1, 2017.
- IU's 17 penalty corners against Richmond was the most in a game since it had 17 against Northwestern on November 4, 2005.
- Goalkeeper Arabella Loveridge has five victories in 11 appearences this season.
- Midfielder Kira Curland has scored a team-high four goals in 12 games this season.
- Forward Kayla Kiwak and midfielders Sofia Arrebola Garcia and Maggie Carter have also scored for IU this season.
- Freshman defender Yip van Wonderen has a team-high four assists on the campaign.
- This weekend will see IU play its seventh and eighth ranked opponents on the season. The Hoosiers are 1-5 so far against Top-25 teams with a win over No. 21 Miami and a close, double-overtime loss to No. 6 Rutgers.
- Seven of the nine teams in the Big Ten are ranked in the NFHCA Coaches' Poll released on October 5th.
- 9 of IU's 19 opponents are in the latest version of the NFHCA Coaches' Poll. IU will play all six of the top-six teams in this week's poll.
- Sydney Keld, Mary Kate Kesler and Yip van Wonderen have helped anchor the defense for IU. While leading the Hoosiers to six victories, the trio has also scored 11 points and poured in 45 shots.
- IU has recorded five shutout victories this season. That's tied for the most in a single season in program history.
- Against Ball State, Arabella Loveridge recorded her fourth clean sheet of the season. That breaks the program record for most shutouts by a goalie in a single season.
