
IUFH Welcomes No. 9 Maryland, Travels to Ball State

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After splitting weekend matchups with No. 2 Iowa and Richmond, IU continues its home stand on Friday against No. 9 Maryland before heading to Ball State for an in-state showdown on Sunday afternoon.

- Maryland has taken a firm control on the series between the two teams since entering the Big Ten Conference. IU has yet to win a match against the Terrapins in eight attempts.
- IU has dominated the series with Ball State over the years. The Hoosiers are 13-5 all time against the Cardinals and have won six in a row against its in-state rival.
- Maryland heads to Bloomington after a mid-week victory over Princeton on Tuesday evening. The Terrapins dropped the conference opener against Penn State last weekend
- Ball State comes into the weekend on the heels of a road-conference victory over Central Michigan. The Cardinals continue MAC play on Friday afternoon against Ohio before welcoming IU on Sunday afternoon.
- IU spent the entire 2020-2021 spring season on the road in Head Coach Kayla Bashore's second year in charge. The Hoosiers finished the campaign 1-14 overall and in conference play. Then-junior Peyton Becker's overtime winner on April 15th at Michigan State gave IU its first victory of the season.
- The Big Ten Conference named its Preseason Honorees on Wednesday, August 25th. Senior Hailey Couch, Senior Mary Kate Kesler and Freshman Kira Curland were named to the list for Indiana.
- Midfielder Mary Kate Kesler was named the IU Scholar Athlete of the Month for September. As a full-time student athlete, Kesler has maintained a cumulative 3.9 GPA in her time in Bloomington.
- Indiana welcomed seven newcomers to the roster for the 2021 season. Kayla Kiwak, Arabella Loveridge, Yip van Wonderen, Meredith Lee, Kira Curland, Maggie Carter and Sofia Arrebola Garcia all come to Bloomington to join the program.
- Mary Kate Kesler returns as last year's leading point scorer. The Louisville native scored seven points in a condensed spring season.
- After opting out for health and safety concerns, Hailey Couch returns to action as the team's active goal scorer. In her sophomore season, Couch bagged 10 goals enroute to Second Team All-Big Ten honors.
- Senior Jes McGivern (51), junior Kennedy Reardon (40) and senior Peyton Becker (30) have each also played 30-plus matches in an IU uniform.
- IU's 4-1 start was the best five-game start to a season since starting 5-0 in 2014.
- The seven goals scored on the opening weekend matched the most IU's scored in its first two games since scoring nine goals in the first two matches of 2014.
- The ranked win over No. 21 Miami (OH) was the first ranked victory for IU since beating No. 15 Wake Forest on Sept. 1, 2017.
- IU's 17 penalty corners against Richmond was the most in a game since it had 17 against Northwestern on November 4, 2005.
- Goalkeeper Arabella Loveridge has four victories in seven appearences this season. Three of those wins were clean sheet performances for the Auckland native.
- Midfielder Kira Curland has scored a team-high four goals in eight games this season.
- Forward Kayla Kiwak and midfielders Sofia Arrebola Garcia and Maggie Carter have also scored for IU this season.
- Freshman defender Yip van Wonderen has a team-high three assists on the campaign.
- Friday's game will be IU's fourth with a ranked opponent this season. It will also be its third against a top-ten foe.
- Eight of the nine teams in the Big Ten are ranked in the NFHCA Coaches' Poll released on September 21.
- 10 of IU's 19 opponents are in the latest version of the NFHCA Coaches' Poll
- Friday's game will be broadcasted on BTN, marking the fourth nationally televised game for IU in the last five years.
- Sydney Keld, Mary Kate Kesler and Yip van Wonderen have helped anchor the defense for IU. While helping the Hoosiers to five victories, the trio has also scored nine points and poured in 34 shots.
- IU has recorded four shutout victories this season. That's tied for second most in a single season in program history.
