
Indiana Field Hockey to Play in Theresa Check Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. –––– The Indiana Field Hockey team will hit the road again for the second weekend of the season. The Hoosiers are set to compete in the Theresa Check Invitational hosted by Miami (OH) with games against Saint Francis (PA) and Miami throughout the weekend.
CORNER HITS
-FIRST WEEKEND BATTLES:
-It was an eventful first weekend of the season for the Hoosiers.
-Indiana played at No. 20 Duke and at No. 14 Liberty last weekend. They were both very close games, but the Hoosiers fell short twice.
-Indiana lost at No. 20 Duke, 3-2. Duke built a 3-1 lead in the third quarter before Indiana added one more to make it 3-2.
-The Hoosiers had a chance to tie at the end of the third quarter with Sydney Keld taking a penalty stroke. The ball went through the back of the cage, but the goal was negated due to a dragged ball call.
-Duke closed out the game for the rest of the way.
-Against No. 14 Liberty, the two teams were in a tight battle from start to finish.
-Both teams scored a goal in the second period within minutes of each other to make it 1-1.
-There would be no more scoring through the remainder of regulation.
-A few minutes into overtime, Liberty was awarded a penalty stroke and converted to close out the game.
THERESA CHECK INVITATIONAL:
-Miami (OH) will host the nation's largest single-venue intercollegiate field hockey tournament this season from Sep. 1-4.
-The event will feature six games over the four days and each team will play two games.
-The tournament field features three Division I programs and three Division II programs.
-It is the first multi-divisional tournament since the NCAA Tournament's final weekend of 2017 when the University of Louisville hosted the Division I, II and III championships.
-The field includes Division I programs Indiana, Miami (OH), Saint Francis (PA), and Division II programs of Slippery Rock, Maryville and American International.
QUICK STATS:
-While just two games into the season, there is already a lot that can be learned from Indiana's early-season performance and playstyle.
-The team has had seven Hoosiers record a shot taken thus far this season. Redshirt senior Sydney Keld leads the team with six shots while graduate student Sarah Charley has four and freshman Inés Garcia Prado has notched three.
-Charley, Garcia Prado and junior Maggie Carter are the team's goal scorers thus far. Each of them have put one in the cage.
-Garcia Prado and juniors Yip van Wonderen and Sofia Arrebola Garcia all have assists to their names, as well. With one goal and two assists, Garcia Prado is the team's leading point scorer at this time with three.
-All four of Charley's shots have been on goal.
-Indiana has played two goalkeepers in the cage this year, veterans of Arabella Loveridge and Shannon McNally. In two games played, Loveridge has 11 saves on the year thus far and a GAA of 2.31.
-The Hoosiers have earned 10 penalty corners so far.
-Six Hoosiers made their Indiana debuts over the weekend. Sarah Charley, Maddie Olshemski, Hannah Riddle, Inés Garcia Prado, Javi Baeza and Theresa Ricci all made their first appearances as Hoosiers against either Duke or Liberty.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:
-The Hoosiers will face two undefeated teams this weekend in Saint Francis (PA) and Miami (OH)
-Saint Francis owns a 3-0 record with wins over Queens, Longwood and Bellarmine. The Red Flash have only allowed one goal all year, which came in their 3-1 win over Bellarmine.
-The Red Flash have outscored their opponents 10-1 in the early portion of the season.
-Saint Francis' Julia Breneman, Eva Valentini and Consu De castro all have notched two goals this season with seven total players having a score.
-The Saint Francis-Indiana matchup will be the second ever meeting between the two programs.
-The only other game was in 2018 when Indiana won 4-2 in Bloomington.
-Miami (OH) enters the weekend with a 2-0 record. The RedHawks took two road victories in the Golden State with a 2-0 win at Cal and a 2-1 win at UC Davis.
-Junior Carlie Servis leads Miami in scoring with two goals while Mary Kate Barbee and Claudia Garcia Negrete each have one to their name.
-This will be the second meeting between Indiana and Miami as the two teams scrimmaged on August 20 in Bloomington.
-The Hoosiers lead the all-time series over Miami with a 14-8 record and wins in the past two seasons.
OVERTIME TIDBITS:
-Indiana's Sofia Arrebola Garcia, Sydney Keld and Sarah Charley were named to the Big Ten's preseason Players to Watch list.
-Indiana's 2022 team captains of Keld and Kennedy Reardon are both team captains again in 2023. Senior Jemima Cookson was voted in as a team captain in the spring, as well.
-Indiana's Javi Baeza, Maggie Carter and Sarah Charley all will play in their home state this weekend. The three Ohio natives return home with Baeza and Carter both originating from Shaker Heights and Charley from Worthington.
