BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Top-ranked Indiana men's soccer came inches away from rescuing a point in its Big Ten Conference opener, but an unfriendly post saw the Hoosiers (5-1-1, 0-1-0 B1G) take their first defeat of the season Saturday (Sept. 13) night on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
Senior forward Palmer Ault – who had previously scored two penalties for IU this season – found the right post with his 90th-minute penalty attempt, essentially cementing the 3-2 loss to Michigan (4-0-2, 1-0-0 B1G).
KEY MOMENTS
• 19' – GOAL! Indiana took an early lead in the match after a cross from redshirt freshman defender Nolan Kinsella leaked across to fellow outside back and junior Alex Barger. Barger kept his composure and deposited his first goal of the season at the far post. Indiana 1, Michigan 0
• 44' – GOAL! Senior midfielder Cristiano Bruletti committed a handball offense in the box off a corner, giving Michigan a penalty. Graduate goalkeeper Holden Brown dove to his left and got a glove on junior midfielder Joao Paolo Ramos's try but not enough to keep it out of the net. Indiana 1, Michigan 1
• 71' – GOAL! Ramos assisted Michigan's next goal, his free kick finding the head of freshman midfielder Kyle Pierson. Michigan 2, Indiana 1
• 81' – GOAL! Ten minutes later, U-M sophomore midfielder Grayson Elmquist scored a header of his own, assisted by junior midfielder Dylan Davis's cross. Michigan 3, Indiana 1
• 84' – GOAL! Junior forward Collins Oduro picked up the ball at the top of the box, sped past two defenders down the right side of the box and fired across his body to reduce the deficit. Michigan 3, Indiana 2
• 90' – Sophomore midfielder Michael Nesci beat a Michigan defender to a fifty-fifty ball in the box and was taken down in the process. The foul was not originally given in the box, but a VAR check rewarded Indiana a penalty kick. Ault went to his right but contact with the woodwork pushed the ball back into play.
