Indiana Rallies for 5-3 Win Over Pacific
9/5/2015 10:15:00 PM | Field Hockey
Morgan Dye scored a dramatic goal at the end of half time, sending the Hoosiers on a scoring frenzy
"The team fought hard today," Janney said on Indiana's win. "We hated getting shut out against Stanford, and our frustration led to a passion to score. It was great to see us with a couple of two-goal leads in today's game."
The Hoosiers took their first lead of the game midway through the first half, but forfeited two unanswered scores within six minutes. The Hoosiers continued creating chances, knowing that their much-needed goal would come.
In the final seconds before halftime, Indiana drew a short corner, their last attempt of the half. Maddie Latino's delivery came with ten seconds to go, and Lorite's ensuing shot took a deflection from Dye's stick, over the keeper's save attempt and into the net. Indiana tied the game at 2-2 with seconds remaining in the half.
The score was Dye's first of the season. According to Janney, the goal was expected and much deserved. "Morgan is one of our fastest, hardest-working players that we have," said the Indiana head coach. "Seeing her get that goal felt rewarding for what she brings to our team."
Dye's first goal of the game came with five seconds to play in the first half, and erased Indiana's only deficit of the game. From there, Indiana knew it was a game they could win.
"I was really excited," Dye said. "We definitely needed that turnaround, and we used the momentum from that goal to keep scoring on them in the second half."
That score to close the half was all the motivation the Hoosiers needed. Indiana went on a 3-1 scoring run in the final 35 minutes. Lorite scored her third goal of the season just three minutes into the second half, followed by Dye's second goal of the game ten minutes later.
"My message at halftime was to keep playing our game," Janney said, following Indiana's late equalizer. "The first half was frustrating, but it was great to see our ability to come back."
Pacific regained ground in the 58th minute to make it 4-3, and looked as if they would level the score line. Indiana was undeterred, and regained their two-score lead in the 67th minute on an empty-net goal from senior Sydney Supica. Supica's goal was her first of the season, and it came in the senior defender's season debut.
"I was really happy to see Sydney score that goal," Janney said. "She's one of our smartest, most impactful players. She knows what to do in the circle, and that paid off for us."
The Hoosiers conclude their California road trip on Monday afternoon, a showdown against the California Golden Bears in Davis, California at 3:00 p.m. ET. According to Dye, this win against Pacific is the next step in gaining the momentum they've wanted as they move through their out-of-conference schedule.
"We were coming off of a tough loss on Friday, but today motivated us and showed that we can score goals," Dye said following her two-goal performance. "Now that we know our scoring capabilities, we'll use that knowledge when we face Cal on Monday."
